A couple of weeks ago we had 29er Squad training down at Weymouth, on the saterday as well as the usually foiling moth thats always out, there was a foiling rs600. It looked great fun, it seemed like he couldnt get it going until he bore off a bit then he could bring it back up to go upwind but he was going very quick. It also looked quite stable trapezing and foiling at the same time but tacking and gybing the boat seemed to backflip everytime.

Has anyone else seen this and got any pictures, looks like an interesting concept.

I've heard about it - it's fitted with a Full Force foil system similar or possibly even identical to the one the moths are using.

I would love to have a go.  The RS 600 seems to have quite a lot going for it as the basis of a foiling singlehander-

1. Powerful responsive rig.

2. Light (although nowhere near as light as a Moth);

3. Cheap ( 2nd hand they are fantastic value).

I can see a few disadvantages too such as the rudder and centreboard being  close together and a long way aft as well as the inherent disadvantages of trying to foil and trapeze at the same time.  Having looked at videos of the foiling moths the stall, stoof, recover seems to be a fairly common manouevre which the sailors sitting securely on the wings routinely survive, however, if done on a trapeze boat I am sure it would result in a fast trip round or into the forestay.

I would definitely wear a crash helmet.

It would be interesting to see some photos of how it the foiling 600 has been put together as I imagine it would be difficult to position and route the control systems without cutting holes in the boat. Perhaps this would be an suitable topic for a Y&Y article?

thats the very point, and it was linton jenkins who did it (the guy who makes the uk foils for the moth) and it isnt much of a 600 now as its been chopped and modified ALOT. its an experiment at present to see if they can introduce a simple foiling option for those who cant handle a moth....

dont tempt me like that, only problem is that all up weight of a B14 inlcuding crew is up to about 240kg which is a lot to lift on foils at about 8 knots

FLAT IS FAST!

You just need bigger foils. The biggest problem with the extra weight is making the foils and the boat strong enough. The CB case is not designed to take the weight of the boat in the up direction you would probably end up pulling the deck off.

If it doesn't break it's too heavy; if it does it wasn't built right
