Unless you enjoy pain, the only reason for straight-leg is when the boat doesn't allow anything else e.g. Laser.

As I understand it, straight-leg hiking was developed as much to restrict damage to knees/hips/lower back as for efficiency. I found when I changed to straight-leg (for all boats - Scorpion, FD, Laser, Osprey etc) it took about a fortnight to get used to the different muscle-groups being used, and it is now more comfortable than bent-leg. There is no doubt in my mind it is also more efficient.

Having sailed the 400 for 4 or 5 yrs now i would say the only way is to bent leg hike it! Thats what 99% of the fleet do! If u can get ur crew to bent leg hike but then lean back it can still be very efficent! Sore on the abs though! till u get used to it!

How u geting on with the 400 btw?

Straight leg hiking is much beta i find. Ok so i only sail a 200 but it is def alot less painfull in the long run. You end up putting more strain on the knees etc if you use the muscles over the kneecap when the leg is bent (and you will if you bent leg hike.) Also you and up furhte away from the boat which means you get a bit more leverage (how much is debatable)

You may have to adjust the lengths of the toestraps if you are going to change between hiking positions but have a go at both and see which one you can actualy stay out the whole beat doing and go for that one.

Thanks folks!

Calum_Reid............    We are Lovin' it   Thanks!

We are starting off in F2-4's max at the moment. The RS 400 was a bit of a bold step for us 'novices' but the boat is very kind to us and as we were looking for a type that would thrill us for a while to come, I feel, a good choice was made.  We have had help from club and class members as well as you kind folks on the forum, thank you!

As it's been F5's at our club of late sadly not much time on the water   but our time will come!

Need to practice taking the main down on the water, as we had one very fast arrival at the concrete slip when the wind picked up to a F5!!  Nobody hurt, and boat undammaged. It was a little hairy though.

We are finding that in light winds it's difficult to 'pop' the top batten....any ideas?

Sorry to drivel on, only, I do get excited with the 400!

If you value your knees in any way straight leg it.  Bent leg just puts silly amounts of strain on parts of your body you are likley to need later in life.

Gotta be straight leg if you want to be able to walk properly later in life.  Granted the 400 is not exactly conducive to it, but you can change the length of the straps.  Better still, get a B14, you have to straight leg like then (not that I'm biased or anything).

In the Ch***b, where we don't have halyards my usual is to round up onto a beam reach upwind of where I want to end up, put the boat hove too and pull the foils up. Boat then drifts in sideways. If I'm not too sure about the depth I slip over the windward side well out with my arms wrapped round the shroud, and when the toes hit the bottom...

One technique is a quick jerk on the mainsheet just as the battens/boom are going across. Combined with a good roll tack it works well when you get the knack. Its all in the timing!
