Being a bit of a pathetic wimp I tend to get a bit scared when the wind picks up and things get hairy. But I can't help liking the feeling of speed too.
I'm wondering if a simple-rig singlehander exists that can give me an enjoyable plane, without scaring me about the amount of sail towering above. It's them waves, and gybing. I don't enjoy it in a 2-man kited boat because of the size. I weigh 70kg and sail in the Chichester harbour. Any ideas? Thank you. |

I would think a streaker would be ideal. Very well mannered boat but still quick. Fine for your weight.

It would probably help if you list boats you do and don't find scary as a reference point.

And the windspeed... Having said that there is nothing
like going out and capsizing lots to make you less worried about windspeed or capsizing. |

I havent sailed Streakers on open water, but have experience of Bytes and Lasers(on the Orwell). Streakers are great boats but when I got my first one some Solo wags would have it they are dreadful things with a tendancy toward the dreaded death roll down wind. They can be a bit scarey and get waterlogged quite easily but then would you be better off with something like a Lightning 368, always quite fancied one of them..On the upside even a balls out Fireball or Merlin Rocket struggles to match the thrill of a streaker at full chat on the plane. Any boat can be scary in the wrong circumstances, my first a little boat an Adventurer pitchpoled me headfirst into the drink, but that was my fault for not heeding the conditions. My best advice is to make sure there is a safety boat on hand when you sail, there is very little more confidence giving be assured.

Also depends what you call fast; as others say; what have you sailed in the past?

lightning 368 are great little boats with a great class asso. backing them up.
if you wanted something faster, supernovas are faster than a laser and more stable. or if your only going to sail in light winds on flat water british moths are good. just go and try boats until you find one you like. ![]() |

It really depends on what is fast and what is scary. The Lightning was fast and scary at Northampton at the Nationals, but compared to a Musto Skiff it was neither. For real spead without scares, maybe a Weta Trimaran or something?

The one thing I found with the Blaze was that whilst it was a quick boat, especially on a tight reach you did not really get a sesnation of speed in the same way as you do in something like a Laser because you are much higher off the water.
Having said that the Blaze is a great boat and would definitely fit the bill of a fast but relatively mild mannered single hander.
