Plus, if you do that you will be both fitter than you were previously, and better prepared than at least half of the fleet who will have just turned up having done no training at all.

Back in my 30's, when I was doing 160-180km one-day bike tours, I found three weeks to be the exact minimum to go from cycling-unfit to fit enough that it was only my bum that limited endurance.

I say cycling-unfit, but as a starting point I'd always walked to work and back (30 mins) which gave me a surprising amount of basic fitness.

During my build-up, I averaged the recommended three, fairly hard 1-2 hour sessions per week. Did the trick.

I realized at the windy Lightning open I did at the weekend that I'm nowhere near fit enough. Being mid 40's, I'm hoping I can get fitter by the August Nationals. I'd not have a hope in 3 weeks. But, if you are starting at a reasonable basic level, you should at least be able to get yourself used to the idea of physical work by then. But do give it a rest for the last few days, and try not to pull anything (muscle wise!) between times.

1)How old are you?
2)How fit have you been in the past?
3)How long ago was that?

If you're still sub 30 yrs old
You were very fit
And it was less than three months ago.

Then three weeks would do it, with minimum 3 times a week hard at it. By
hard at it I mean full on exercise of the type you're likely to do and
preferably twice the duration.

Either way, don't just do nothing, three weeks hard at it will at the very
least sharpen you up and a sharp body = sharp mind which will not do
any harm at all.

Don't listen to the pie eaters, if you want to do well, being fit is
paramount, as I've realised these past few weeks not being that way, in
fact I'm just about to join you over the next three weeks funnily enough.

One thing my new boat needs is someone fitter than me in my current
state to pilot it..

Absolutely murder yourself in the gym every other day, so far as rowing and
running for two weeks, eating plenty of protein, then take the 3rd week off.
That'll be about all you can do really.
I'm not convinced that will really make much difference if any at all but I'm
going on the basis that anything is better than nothing.

Get yourself a roadbike and ride that every day (start off
doing like, 10 miles a day and gradually build it up)
