Not sure, tbh. There were a couple of links on the Kaspersky site which downloaded a tools in zip files. The first one didn't seem to do anything but the second one did the business.

I think if I did anything like this again, I would definitley check for and download any removal tools prior to AV install just in case....I felt a bit uncomfortable being on line and downloading stuff without AV in place.

Off topic but since you asked - They dont run at once so theres no extra 'overhead'. The short answer is that they are each good at different things. For example I run a lot of resource intensive programs (rendering and CFD code mostly) so my XP partition is 64bit and completely stripped back to try and squease as much performance out as possible but its otherwise rubbish (very little driver support etc). I spend most of my time at the moment running linux but its a M**rosoft world and its hard to get by without a 'normal' windows setup.

...aaaand thanks for making me feel horrifically geeky.

no I'm the one who shoul d be sorry for asking as I was (cringe) genuinely interested! eek!

By way of a postcript Kaspersky Internet 2010 has been eventually downloaded over the weekend courtesty of Barclays Bank offer.

McAfee was a complete b*stard to remove. The Add/Remove function only got rid of some of it. I then had to download a further two removal tools (and a free version of Winzip to open them)

There then seemed to be some error (can't remember what) on the Kaspersky install. I left it overnight and tried again and the following morning and it installed perfectly. Did a full scan and it appears I didn't pick anything up during the time I was online without any AV.
protection.

Appreciate all the advice given. Many thanks.

Watch out for free or alternative anti-malware programs if you use Kaspersky: If discovered by Kaspersky during installation, you may well have to uninstall them (Kaspersky does this for you), before continuing with the installation. Not sure what happens during those extra few relatively unprotected minutes, though.

Stick with Windows Firewall and install one AV over the other one. You'll get grief from the old AV as the new one takes over.

I'll repeat the advice - download the software before you uninstall the existing one but don't click on the install button before you have uninstalled the existing. Nearly all AV's are a full download with a virus database at a point in time, they then install like a normal program and update the database post install. AVG is a case in exception in that it downloads an installer which instigates a further download of the whole program, not sure why they did that but they did.

The advice about Malwarebytes is very good too, its one of the only things out there that will get rid of the exceedingly annoying Antivirus 2009, etc, etc virus. If you've ever had this or ones of its deminutives you'll know what I mean. For your own sake if you ever get a download of this type starting, stop it asap.
Everything I say is my opinion, honest
