Hi again guys, Well due to A Level commitments and due to West Kirby marine lake being closed since about march i havent had the chance to sail more than about half a dozen times this year! This meant that i sold my laser and am now selling the 420 to get a firefly due to not being able to find a crew that can use the spinnaker and competently trapeze etc. This means that i have around £2500 - £3000 to spend on a singlehander for myself as the lake should be open again within the next two weeks. I know this has been asked a lot but i have slightly different requirements. Id mainly be sailing it on the lake (60 acres or so i think). But id also be sailing it on the tide whenever possible. Im around 5'8", a little over 60kgs but gaining weight fairly quickly at the moment, sailed a radial for about 2 years, as the only singlehanded classes at WK are Solos, Lasers and Illusions id probably be handicap racing. Idealy i would like something other than a Laser but all depends on whats available of course. Thanks! |

On the marine lake...do me a favour! Europe....gives you 15 Kgs growing weight! you'd get a great one for that money. Maybe a Streaker....I don't like them but they seem popular up that way. Solo...got some to sail against, if you' re gaining weight quickly you'll soon be in the weight band, if a little close to the bottom. Are you still growing upwards? |

I might be sailing it, but it's still sh**e!

another vote for the rs300. They are great on lakes and being lighter is fine. In fact on light wind lakes it could even be an advantage. When i got my first one (moved out of a laser like you) i was 64/65kg and sailed it ok. Now im up to around 70ish and iv not noticed much difference. Definately worth trying one for sure.

I thought of the streaker straight away - nice little boat, growing class, good py. A Europe would also be good and imho is a better boat than a streaker ( and yes I have owned and sailed both).
That being said, if all the 300 guys go for the new RS100 could be a buyers' market.... |

the same, but different...

Obviously biased, but I would say a 300 is a boat that you would grow into both weight and technically wise. Some of our top guys are light weights. It's not so much about grunt but rather technique. Also you have the tactical elements of by the lee and all that zig-zaging down wind. The are great in waves too. I think going down wind by the lee and heading back up to keep the boat surfing on the waves and then back to the lee again is the most rewarding sailing an any part of the course.

You could get a Europe with a nice shiny carbon mast for less than £1000 second hand. And you could save the rest of the money for future use.
