So one for the CVRDA that tipped up on another thread, but a topic
worthy of discussion and if I were marketing boats right now would
certainly wang up the retail a bit in order to offer..

So how much should it be for which boat is the topic at hand.

How much should say a used FD fetch?

£30? £300?

How much for a Furball?

If you were the government or a marketeer what would your offer be for
old last century junkers like Contenders? (They seem to be a growing
favorite amongst the fashionably challenged)

And should such a scheme be extended to any Cat simply because they
waste so much space on the water and in the boat park..

And those bath tub boats that tubby people seem to gravitate toward the
not entirely Spartan 300...

Buy them all up, burn the lot and start afresh, how wonderful would that
be?

Or not

How dare you GRF, i sail a 300!!  and

 "I AM SPARTA"

I say forget burning them, i say burn the PY scheme and start again!!  Lets make it fair and current!!  (Sorry to change the thread direction)

I reckon if you were born in Sparta Grumpf, you would of been chucked in the "scrap" child pile as with your midget height you surely wouldn't of measured up to the Spartans standards!

Well it's not an entirely tongue in cheek idea, not that I"ve done it, but if
you were selective of the boat and consider in the scrapping the cost of
hardware that could be recycled, like the blocks, wires, ropes, chain
plates, cleats, trapeze hooks, rudders, stocks, foils, etc etc

Lots of the stuff is good quality stainless (in some cases better stainless
than comes out of china these days)that would clean up.

Commercially it could be made to work if the margin was there in the
first place..

The trick is build something with the margin in place then do it.

I'm sure that Topper, RS and Laser all do PX deals, in fact i should imagine they have more margin in the PX then they do in the new boat.  The idea with scrapping cars though is to kick start the new car market again and to introduce more enviromentally friendly cars onto the road.  The old cars can be recycled how could you really recylce an old mirror?  it just needs burning, so really all that will happen is the reatiler will increase the unit selling price of the new boat to allow for and "over allowance" of a part exchange.  Its what they do currently in the motor trade, if you want £2000 for your part exchange and really its true "trade value" is only £1000 where so you think the extra grand comes from??  They don't magically find a buyer that is willing to pay an extra grand!  I'm sure this same practice would happen with boats.  Also not really sure what the scrap value of 60kg of soggy, painted marine ply or fibre glass is?  My guess is the same as GRFs rubber duck!

What are the right consituencies? It is also worth pointing out that the government scrappage scheme is only running until the £30m is all gone.  Thats only 30,000 cars, drop in the ocean really.

Thats not a problem, how many people actually upgrade from a 10+ year car to a new one!  I have a feeling this might just be gesture politics from a failing government, IMHO of course!
I might be sailing it, but it's still sh**e!
