Hi

One other question i meant to ask.

Which of the two, the RS400 or Laser2000 is the best for sailing single-handed?

In all honesty, neither would be any good singlehanded.  Of the two, the 2000 would be better, but I wouldn't recommend it.  Hope that doesn't sound too negative, but they are both big, heavy boats, designed for two people.

Hi Peaky

Thanks for your honesty. The trouble is i am quite a big bloke, 6ft + and am after a boat that i can sale by myself as well as with a mate. I have been advised to stay away from most other stuff because me and a crew may be to heavy!

Any thoughts?

*Definitely* not the RS400!The L2000 is a bit of a lump to move round singlehanded, and is probably still not great. Truth is there are not really any boats that are great to sail both singlehanded and two handed because the requirements are suprisingly different.

My Dart 18 is a great sail singlehanded.  I almost sail it more single than double handed these days.  Its a lump to shift around the shore, but on the water its good fun.

I've had a 2000 out on my own a few times- it can be done, but it's not ideal. Only takes one person (especially of your size) to right it. Quite fun hiking with the kite up, but they really aren't set up well for it.

BUT! it isn't ideal. You'd be better off getting a cheap Laser for when your mate isn't available- possibly with a Rooster 8.1 rig, which isn't a massive outlay.

The 400 would be a true pig on your own- in light winds you need the crew to leeward to let you sit up high enough to see forward well, and in anything more most people would struggle to handle it.

I know the Laser Vago gets a lot of sl*gging here but it's quicker than a L2000, not as much of a beast as a RS400 and isn't too bad single-handed. (by which I mean that there has been some thought given to getting the kite up/down while helming and that all the controls are easily accessible at the back.) Maybe look at a Topaz as well.

Thanks everyone.

Now i am really confused! After visiting the Dinghie show last weekend both the RS and Laser guys told me that the 400 and 200 could be saild solo!

Back to the drawing board..!

If the guys at RS told you an RS400 could be sailed singlehanded then I'm
pretty disappointed in them.
I sailed one with a friend at 20.5 stone all up and we felt VERY overpowered.
We could keep the boat upright and moving in any breeze but we were flat
hiked in a force 2. Above the force 2 we just Needed to be heavier!
The 2000 is the better option in this case, with a semi battened smaller main
means much less punishment. The laser 2000 also has a furling jib (as far
as I'm aware) and so it's easy to get rid of the jib and just sail with the main.
