This needs to be ranted!
I've just had several attempts at filling out an online application form to be allowed to do my race coaching course, only to have the form rejected several times. The reason for the rejection you ask? I dared to be so bold as to include proper grammar to better verbalize 'summary of experience'. It wasn't until I systematically reworded everything to exclude all apostrophes and commas that it finally accepted my form. I couldn't bring myself to remove the full stops and was relieved when it finally accepted my form with those included. However, the problem now arises that they're to receive an application form so dumbed down that they'll assume me to be either a slow child or merely a complete moron. Who ever designed the application form clearly still harbours a severe grudge against their old english teacher. Doug H Edited by Doug.H |

In their defense, it sounds like it may just be a badly programmed form.
In programming, commands (SQL statements) to databases tend to be enclosed within apostrophes or quotes. If the form data to update the database also includes apostrophes or quotes, and these aren't properly 'escaped', then it can break things, as the computer gets confused! No excuse really, but quite possibly the actual reason. Might be worth reporting it their webmaster? |

Although it is lazy programming there are characters that without some fiddling are upsetting if the next step is database access. Apostrophes are a favourite as are ampersands - and don't get me started on the Irish and their surnames - apostrophes valid in email names - whatever next!
If I ever use numerics in place of proper spelling for words such as "before" and "great" or am caught using the numeric equivalent for "all the time" - please shoot me. Get hip to the jive (or whatever you young people say) - never. |

Like some other things - sailing is more enjoyable when you do it with someone else

Doug, if you can bear to, please let their webmaster know. This is probably an issue with apostrophes and database access, which is easy to solve if the programmer takes a bit of care.
