I sold mine for £900, to a chap that sailed a Dart Cat ( it went to Bala ) last year. I had bought it 5 years ago for £1200. £1500 does seem a bit steep, I would of thought £1000 would be more the mark.

Vareo's don't come close to the feeling and speed of a Ray off wind. Although obviously if you want to race they are a much better option.

I sail an mx ray , nothing i know comes close to it for shear` blasting` fun, i dont race it, i just enjoy the extreme buzz of this amazing little machine, i used to sail a Dart cat, which was fun, but nothing compares to the `Ray`. Despite what you may read, it goes upwind fine with a little practice. Dont hesitate, buy it now!!!I am told it used to be competitive in handicap racing. (previous comments about a `dying class` are relevant though, so dont pay over the odds. Last year I paid approx £750. for a minter)

Or, keep saving, and get a Vareo!

All the pros of the MXRay plus some good bits of its own, but still activley sailed and raced, and of course, a member of the glorious RS Association!!

I've been thinking about getting one, how often do these appear on the second hand market and for how much?

I was considering an RS600 but while it is a lovely boat I'm not sure I can be bothered with the pain of learning to sail it and have the same problems as my old 14. Getting totally nailed whenever the wind is above 15knts every time gets old pretty quick, I'd quite like something at is just a bit of fun for lake sailing without all the drama.

The mx-ray looks like it may fit the bill even if it is far from refined!

EDIT: Just looked at the link. £1500 is a bit much for such a simple boat which has almost faded from existence!

Didn't have a problem getting rid of mine. I miss it actually.

Good cheap boat. A total blast off wind. Requires good technique to get up wind.  And a little weight sensitive. Basically a good boat for large flat water lakes / reservoirs. Doesn't like chop as the rig will pant and exhaust the power.

It was probably because it was a very difficult boat to get upwind although by the looks of it the Downwind ride would of made it worth not moving much upwind!
