Anyone got the new book?  Is it worth getting if you already own High Performance Sailing?  Is it mainly the same but with some updates, or all new?  The Amazon reviews for the new book actually all relate to the old book, which seems dodgy to me.

Nope, there's a great deal of new stuff.

There's loads more on handling high performance boats,

There's a whole bunch of development of 29er, 49er and the aborted spinnaker Tasar

There's a bunch of stuff on how Bethwaite has worked out some performance ratios which are on the way to a dinghy VPP and there's more detail on this than the last book.

There are various new observations on gust behaviour and so on since last time.

For the sorts of things I'm interested in its definitely worth having. There is overlap, mainly I think so that you don't have to have to find the old book if you've bought the new one. I haven't looked at it with a number in mind but my finger in the air guess is that its between 50% and 80% new. I think its probably better focussed for most sailors than the old one too: it is a better book in my opinion for whatever that's worth!

I assume we're talking about this book?:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Higher-Performance-Sailing-Handling- Techniques/dp/1408101262/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books& qid=1231434186&sr=1-1

Of which I was unaware (despite having had High Performance Sailing since it first came out). The first review of this later book on Amazon is dated 2000.

All of which leaves me somewhat confused: in 2005, Frank Bethwaite told me he was writing a new book - so apparently we'll shortly be seeing the launch (or not, acording to publishers' whims) of "Even Higher Performance Sailing"

Or (penny slowly drops - maybe) Amazon have included reviews of the first book in error (certainly the comments could apply to that). I wonder what you'd receive of you ordered the £17.50 used book?

EDIT: I've just clicked the £17.50 and does indeed appear to be the first book - hardly what I'd describe as an "Other Edition". "Other book by same author", by all means.

The book printed in 2003 was Frank Bethwaites second issue of High Performance Sailing. This included updates from issue 1 written in 93, predominantly based on work Julian had done designing the 49er with its alledged humpless drag curve, dont start !!!!

Anyway Frank went on a bit of a world tour with the up-issued book while launching the 59er, but the book, specifically the section on hull design dated quickly as dinghy development increased at phenomenal pace especially in the UK. This prompted the current re-write to capture what are now considered normal techniques as so many of us sail what are in essence high performance dinghies. If the book you are looking at has the AAMI 18ft skiff on the cover its not the latest version. The new version has the Spanish Olympic 49er on the cover and is about £31.50 on amazon.

But in Amazon the reviews for that book (with the 49er on it) actually relate to the one with the 18 on the cover.  Naughty or stupid?
