There is a question on the ISAF site about what happens if kit breaks that is holding a camera or GPS and if replacing between races (I think it was a Spi pole on a T) that if a suitable camera / GPS could not be sourced, could the coach boats be issued with suitable weights to bring the boats back to weight.

Maybe the T's will be carrying GPS / Cameras some times.

I agree that there should be footage from each course available.  How difficult or expensive can it really be!

they should have GPS's on each boat and then the commentators should have a big screen with the GPS data displayed so they can see where each boat is and where it's going so they can say stuff like "You can't see the british boat in this shot but don't worry because they are over to the left a bit and are getting lifted so they will come out ahead" or something. And the footage they broadcast should occaisionally cut to the commentators graphic.

I think all the courses should be filmed and then whoever has broadcasting rights should be given all the footage to edit it and broadcast it as and when they want so that if the BBC have 2 hours or whatever it is of sailing in their schedule they don't end up showing and hour and a half of an empty course with no boats even drifting round or just boats drifting round waiting for the end of a postponement WHEN THERE IS RACING GOING ON ON ANOTHER COURSE. They could even have shots of boats rigging up so they could interview sailors or whatever. JUST SOMETHING TO GET RID OF THE SHOTS OF A DEPRESSINGLY FLAT CHINESE SEA WITH NO BOATS ON IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

sorry rant over

I don't think the commentators actually have any control over the pictures they get so it's a bit hard to put out a decent analysis.

Did you see the Chinese graphic of the Star with a spinny on! Symptomatic that the people providing the presentation don't have much clue.

What would have been useful in understanding what is going on is a GPS on each boat so we could then see where they were. That with some indication of wind direction and strength from the marks could provide some indication of what is going on.

What have the GPS's stuck to the Laserd done?

They haven't set the bar very high for 2012.
Like some other things - sailing is more enjoyable when you do it with someone else

Yeah and another thing i noticed is that there wasn't an overview of the course showing the bigger picture, as sailors we know when they are heading upwind/downwind but as all the footage was close ups and not really showing where they are around the course, a non-sailor wouldn't have a clue whats going on!!

there needs to be more analysis and explanation of the tactics involved, so that non sailors actually understand what is going on.

well to be completely honest i think it is boring!!

Watching the Stars this morning was OK for half an hour but after that it just got boring.....You can't really see the tactics involved even though we (as sailors) understand whats going on, its slow as there is hardly any wind so to non-sailors it will just look like they are sitting there in the boat and also as the wind is so light they aren't capsizing or looking even slightly shakey so its not that exciting to watch.

I can see exactly why it looks boring to non-sailors.
