Not because its " different " .. But because its a dull attempt by Laser to replicate the RS500.

Rotomoulded boats may be " indestestructable " ... But would you be seen floating around in a Fairy Liquid bottle?

It's the 3000's replacment, I would think that the 500 is RS's go at the 3000/Vago, not the other way round. Eitherway...meh

I'm not against it because it is is plastic. I'm not against it because it is a replacement for the 3000. I'm against it because, having sailed one, it is not a good boat. It is poorly laid out. Granted, I am too bog for it, but I can still appreciate that a smaller person would still find problems. For instance, the attempts at kick bars built into the tanks up front- seem to have been designed for people with bound feet. The jib sheeting postion- in line with the mast. Ugh. Not nice.

So many little things. Horrible. And not as fast as Laser originally claimed (at launch, they were saying it was as fast as a 4000- PY was last seen heading about 100 points higher).

The sailing cognoscenti in the US have long ignored Sailing World, as far as I can tell.

Update: oh god, I just saw, they've rated it top boat as a SINGLE HANDER?

Ahhh the USA bastion of good taste as ever.
Like some other things - sailing is more enjoyable when you do it with someone else

Argh.  But then again, they do have very little to choice from... why not the 'lovely' sunfish.  Again, I'm not against it because its plastic, I'm against it because its a very poorly laid out boat.  Crewing it was nasty.  Every thing was in the wrong place.  When on the wire I couldn't cleat or uncleat the jib.  The kickbars were pointless.  Oh and can some one please explain to me what's the point of this furling jib?  Laser you should've stuck with the 3000... far, far better boat.

My understanding is that this is a credible, cheap to manufacture boat which serves as a way to get people into the sport at a much more affordable price than might otherwise be the case.  Given cheap production costs the vendor can spend more on marketing and maybe develop a business.  Last time I heard sailing clubs could do with more members and that much less than 0.01% of the population were keen dinghy racers.  I hope the Vago attracts people into the sport who then want to upgrade to sail something a bit more sophisticated.  I dont think the Vago is being marketed towards kids who want to sail 29ers.  Or maybe it is.  What do you think?  Congratulations on the award to all concerned with the boat.

giraffe- the criticism from myself and Fans 1024 isn't to do with what it is intended to be, or the price, or anything like that. It's based on the reality of the actual boat. It is badly designed- this makes it awkward to sail. How is a boat that's awkward to sail going to help matters? If it was well laid out, I would not be critiscing it the way I am. But as both an instructor, and someone that has sailed one, my opinion is that it is not the boat the marketing makes it out to be.
