mate you were properly shivering... but hey, it wouldn't be appropriate to 'give you a ribbing'....

tbh- it was properly windy, I only lasted about 3 minutes before I pi$$ed it and limped back to shore.

Hell apart from my hands that was quite warm! And if i hadnt stood about on the shore for so long Id have been fine  And you did pretty well to survive as far as you did

Personally I hate steamers.  I'd rather wear a drysuit, and that's saying something.  Normal longjohns, mid layer and aquafleece are nearly always enough when combined with warm gloves, boots and a fleece hat.

When I was 8 I made the mistake of putting my (ungloved) cold wet hands in front of an electric fire.  Never again.  Oh the pain!!!

cotton's just rubbish full stop on boats- piss poor thermal performance when you're cold, no wicking ability when you're sweating.

i got a steamer from the gul shop in gunwharf just before Xmas and it is great. but it boody well should be for what we (parents ) paid for it. i think it was somewhere near £150. its very dry and warm and its got this thing you put over your head which is really good for keeping the water out even when you go for an elegant dive off the back of the rack of a 600, headfirst, into the water. oh, also its all stretchy neoprene which makes it really comfy for moving round and a lot easier to get into.
600 732, will call it Sticks and Stones when i get round to it.
Also International 14, 1318

I got mine from ewetsuits.com (5/4mm) - mostly diving stuff - well made (= a bit heavy - but V warm) and stonking value (£77!!!). The built in knee pads are great. I've had a 3mm one from them for ages - and I'll be getting another in the spring.
Like some other things - sailing is more enjoyable when you do it with someone else

i recently bought a oneil steamer thing,  which was pretty water tight and very warm but it had the smooth skin finish on which although is great for reducing windchill, it is very delicate and prone to catching on things and so developing nicks and tears which can be a pain to repair

so if i was to buy another i would go for one with a convential finish as it is less likely to get damaged but make sure it has the glued and blindstiched or liquid seams

hope this helps
