Depends how you define cr*p stunts really, 12 hours in a tub of cold beans anyone?? Have been to Southport for the last 4 years now, excellent event even if the locally alkies did manage to sneak in this year, mind you it was hard to distinguish between them and some of the sailors :-) Edited by Ian S |

i think as amazing as the feat is of staying alert that long and finishing so well, its not something i could do for 12 hours let alone double that, had it blown more than a two for the majority of races then we ould have seen something completely different. This year was also really warm, i know i went out from 4-6am in a shorty and a pair of hi-fits, manys the time i've been wearing a wetsuit as a body warmer underneath my dry-suit and still been cold. I live in Southport and have raced in every race since i was about 13/14, i know of a few years when the wind has been a good 4 and more for the whole time and crews attempting this feat have been towed in with hypothermia, injuries and all sorts else. I think it can be incredibly dangerous if you're not extremely lucky with the weather. I'm not taking anything away from the guys who did it it is a stunning performance, especially to finish so high up, and for a well deserved charity i just think that when it is compared to
then this is an equally very dangerous and daft thing for people to do. |

It's a fantastic race. Not only the sailing but the socail also.
I think the two guys who did the whole thing were amazing. I had to be woken up by my helm half way down the off wind leg at 4am!!! (at least he noticed!!). ![]() |

I don't suffer from insanity...I enjoy every moment of it.

Respect. I bet they had sore back sides at the end of it It's a good effort compared to some of the crap stunts people do for charity. |

This year the Southport 24 was won by Bolton SC with an impressive team of GP sailors..................second were two lads from Hollinworth SC who sailed 24 hours on there own raising funds for Sail4Cancer. I was at this event and I never saw them stop, perhaps they did, but I never saw it. Anyone who has ever sailed in this race will understand how remarkable this feat is. The wind was rather frustrating with a gale at the end so they did not have an easy time. I just thought it was worth a mention on this forum where we usualy only boast about going fast ect.
