ok so what its it about undercovers that makes them such a PITA..apart from shrinkage...also like most keen 'open meeting' sailors my boat tends to live outside in its undercover all year round and the uv degradation of the cover is terrible. a couple of years and it's well on it's way..I've owened my 4k for 6 years now and am on my second cover which is definately showing signs of being severley uv degraded.

Anyone know of a sailmaker who is better at making them so they don't fall apart...

I think the majority of places will all make very similar undercovers.  Any peice of material (practical to be used as a cover) will degrade in sunlight and through general whethering over a few years.  But then thats exactly the point of the cover, so that it is the cover itself that degrades and not the boat.

It is questionable whether you should keep the undercover on a boat if its stationary. During trailing it prevents damage, but when it is not moving the undercover will get wet and then just hold the dampness next to the boat. Keeping the boat in this damp environment may cause gradual take up of water and absorbtion into the hull.

So to recap:

Leaving it on wears the cover out.

Taking it off / putting it on every few weeks = 5 mins of effort ( Less with help ) and results in an undercover that will last a lot longer.

I know what I would do!
