Not really Dinghy related but once swiped a rudder off a 40ft carbon race Catamaran mid Atlantic by colliding with a whale...

A Wayfarer had a meeting with the Gunnell of a 420 I was sailing ...

And I broke the Vareos boom in a F4 on Alton ... ( It survived the previous days F7 gusts though!! )

Not me, but sailing a Nats at Mounts Bay, on a 3 sail reach, in force 4-5, the boat in front of me stop dead in the water. Later on the shore I found out he'd hit a Basking Shark, and lost the whole of the underwater section of the boat in front of the mast.

It must have been an interesting insurance claim.

Two Mirrors, the only two boats on the lake barring the safety boat, managed to collide and strip one gunwhale off. I looked round and saw this piece of wood swinging round off the side of the other boat, couldn't work out what it was... thankfully i came away with only some red paint on my varnish.  But the only 2 boats on the lake and we managed to collide...

Snapped a Laser boom about 5 seconds after making a gybe in a F6. Was so pleased with myself then everything suddenly went very lose and got very wet. The best bit was I kept both parts of the boom by virtue of them somehow going through the bottom panel of the sail!

The other good one was at Grafham this year. Following a (nice shiny and new) Solution down the run, came to the gybe, he went looked OK, I went accelerated out of the gybe to find him upside down about 6 feet in front of me.... BANG! The aftermath....

Damage to Blaze 0
Damage to Solution big scratch is the bottom and a large dent (at least it was not a phantom though I think I would have gone through)

I was gutted for him (sorry AndyMck) but the bugger beats me at home now so I shouldnt complain!

worst break, dropped the rig on an X382 once...also managed to be on deck (but not driving) when we rammed <head on> a mooring pile under engine alone in a Sunfast yacht and moved one half of the hull 1-2" backwards compared to the other (port) half!!  however this is the dinghy section so must admit to hitting a cardinal mark once, stripped the side of my boat, ripped the sail and v.embarressed at hitting something so big, yellow and black and basically blooming avoidable!

Not so much as a breakage but....When sailing with school, someone went out on their own in a wayfarer in a nice 4 gusting 6, and after about half an hour, the boat was just getting lower and lower in the water, by the time the rescue had seen him, the hull was below the water, and he was basically sitting in the lake.
