Can anyone help! I'm trying to track down or find information on a boat I saw advertised last year, on an couple of the online advertisers, the boat was located in Scotland. It was called a Micro 18 - NOT a GEM MICRO, that's something quite different (but a fine boat I believe!), probably Polish built, possibly by a company called HOT BOAT DESIGN. It's an 18 foot drop keel sportsboat or small yacht/trailer sailor with a cuddy rather than a cabin (I think), had what looked like a fully battened mylar mainsail, not sure if there was a kite. I would be grateful for any information on these boats, manufacturer contact, photos, boats for sale, whatever. Many thanks. I am located in Derbyshire. |

The Micro Cuppers are a develpment class of small racing 'cruisers'. I believe the Gem was a Humphries design to this rule. There are some photo's of various designs here. http://www.micro-ger.de/bildwm04.html and the international association website is here http://www.microclass.org/main.html There is also a link to a UK group which still seems to be active http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/microclass/ I'm sure that if you get in touch they will be able to help with any questions you have. Cheers Ian |

You will get all the info you need from the microclass org site above . I saw a micro 18 for sale in Scotland too last year , it was a "Micro 18 " of Steven Jones design , the class umbrella they fit under is "microcuppers " The one I saw was on ebay and other sites , it was called Sunburst and was the boat I crewed on in 1981(ish) micro ton cup held in France , although a production boat had to sail in proto class though was fastest uk production boat at time , though Gems , woodchips etc were all on a par . I also saw a more recent Hot Boat for sale , I think one regularily sailed in Windemere winter series they are polish and manufacturer link is in site above. Micro cuppers weren't cruisers , although by rule had four very crude berths , had to be sailed by sitiing out intoestraps , lifted keel for offwind , could and would capsize keel up or down , were sportsboats of their day , but a bit undercanvassed compared to current sportsboats , Still very popular in europe , but uk circuit died out.
Gr* fun and plane hard when the winds up . we used to travel at j24 speeds , and kept up with much larger boats of the day , half tonners etc .
