Hi,

Im now looking for a singlehander for my daughter. Shes 12 and about 5 ft 2". She weighs about 5 stone and has little experience helming but does know all the basics from crewing a 420.

Id also like a boat that could be used by my son aswel whos almost 15 about 5 ft 5" and 8 stone.

I wouldnt like another topper because we've recently sold one so any ideas?

Hope you can help!

How about a doublehander they could sail together? *ducks* A topper would be ideal for your son, but if he doesn't like them then maybe laser radial/4.7, would suit them both.

Personally I loathe the 4.7: its so out of proportion rig to hull. 'Fraid I'd get a Topper.

yeah i was thinking of the 4.7 because my son could race it and daughter could mess about etc. There is also a laser fleet at the club which will be good for training etc.

what are the 4.7s like? Are they good for a beginner?

If not any other suggestions?

Thanks again

Splash

http://www.splashdinghy.org.uk

see this thread: http://www.yachtsandyachting.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=2 362&KW=Splash&TPN=2

this is what I said about it there:

A fantastic combination of hull, sails and mast. Huge in Europe ( 200 odd at events )  and 60 odd at the UK Nationals. Your daughter will be able to feel what she is doing, de-power when she needs to and when she capsizes she'll be able to get back in it. And she won't out grow it off it for a very long time. You can upgrade the boat with a bigger sail and longer boom - Then it is called a FLASH and sail competitively over 18.

Basically the SPLASH is like a Europe without the hassle of a ultra low boom. And your son will love it in a breeze, in-fact you'll need two because he'll love it in all conditions so much.

This boat was designed for people who have outgrow the Oppie and are not big enough for Lasers e.t.c So in short your two children.

My wife has one, she is 7 stone and 5". We bought it for her to get back into sailing and then to hand down to our son who is 9 and currently 3.5 stone who sails a Oppie. He sails it when it is light. We paid £1200 for ours, and it was in very good condition. They are FANTASTIC! And I would say that about many boats.

here are a couple pics from the worlds...

SPLASH sailor, I guess about the same size as your daughter?...

and on the Blackwater...

reading your other thread:

I had said go for a Int Canoe, but with your kids looking for a boat too, why not go for 2/3 Splashes.

I am the same size as you ( well 1 inch shorter ) also with not the greatest back in the world. We bought our Splash for my wife (see other thread) and also to hand on to my son who is 10 and sailing an Oppy.

But I don't have a single hander, so I sail the Splash every now and then, and I have to say it is a really pleasent experience.

Sailer her this Saturday. Not the wildest wind day ever I'm sure you will agree. And I had a ball.

So my reccomendation would be to put the Splash on your try out list for all of you!
