We get a bit of chat about what sorts of boats are popular. Here's a table based on the 5 year averages in the YY table for class popularity. Precise definitionms of what's a SMOD, what's a one design, what's an open rule are of course difficult. Arguably too the presence of 300ish Oppies (One Design) and 200ish Toppers (SMOD) distorts the numbers in the favour of singlehanders if you consider the youth classes to be another game.

Or perhaps the exact opposite...

non-SMOD boats are more popular (2000 ish sailed at nationals versus 1500 for SMODS)

non-trapeze boats are more popular (with about 2,500 sailed compared to only about 1000 trapeze boats).

Jim,

I assume you are counting boat ... I think it would be more interesting to count people if you are looking at participation; boats cant compete without people.
