Has anyone got any recommendations for which foam to use as a hull core for a 14ft dinghy? The choice seems to come down to PVC foam from Divinycell, Airex or Klegecell or a SAN foam from SP Systems (Corecell). Are there others? Which would you recommend (and why)? Thanks. |

you could try http://www.cfsnet.co.uk/acatalog/CFS_Catalogue__FOAMS___CORE _MATERIALS_14.html
or www.boatbuildingsupplies.com (or maybe .co.uk?) or call your friendly local boatbuilder |

Shameless plug for sponsor time...
Give Wiz Deaz at Matrix Mouldings a bell... Youd have a hard time finding a more helpfull bloke to chat about stuff like this... What you chose will depend on the shape of the hull and the rest of the layup so its hard to give any specific advice without more info... whats the project? 0800 0744788 Wiz.Deas@mcmc-uk.com http://www.mcmc-uk.com/ |

Thanks for that. I've been reliably informed (by a Cherub self-builder) that Airex is the way to go as the pores are smaller and it is flexible without heating. Its a NS14, but still work in progress, especially above the waterline. |

That looks pretty severely sexy!
Is that all your own work? Impressed. Most of the mods on my boat are being built with airex (other than the snout sides which are something similar but more flexible - I forget the name) And it seems to be material of choice for most things in the cherub fleet. You could even go for something like nomex but there are quite a few issues accociated with that kinda construction (ie it breaking up if it gets saturated) |

Personally use Corecell, as moving to it from Divinycell saved quite a
bit of weight (at least 5 k's in a N12), mostly due to smaller pores
and soaking less resin.
90 kilo density is pretty easily available and fairly impact resistant for hulls and the like. Don't know if youve looked at N12 shapes before going with that NS shape, but it looks a lot like a stretched Feeling Foolish! Looks cool, keep us updated. |

Looks a bit like an old Javilin hull. Sorry but it might be a bit fat. I think I still have the drawings for the first Tequila hull. If I do I'll send it to you. Are there any to race againts where you are or can you get some others? |

Thanks for the comments guys. I've not directly looked at any boat whilst designing this, but have studied the Merlin Rocket and (antipodean) Javelin websites. Also I guess my time sailing 200s and 400s must have influenced the lines. If it looks like a Feeling Foolish, it can't be so bad. Aardvark - have you ever used Airex? Your reasons for using Corecell are the same as the ones I was given for using Airex. Interesting to know how they compare. Skiffe, the Tequila drawings would be great if you've got them. There are no NS' as far as I know in the UK, so am doing this design blind. I just like the look of them and would like to sail one. I looked at importing an old one from Oz, but the cost of transport was too much, so figured I would make my own. Should be good to race against Merlin Rockets, N12s, RS2/400s etc. I think I'm right in saying that the hull rules for the NS and Javelin are very similar, hence the resemblance? As there are no others to race against, I don't mind sacrificing a bit of top end speed for controlability (but not too much!), but in what way fat? In the bow, at the stern, or all over? I won't take offence - all comments and constructive critisicm welcome. Cheers. |

The Jav was the prototype hull for the NS14, if you are desgining a NS14 then get the rules, I think they are on the net. It looks fat all over. As for transport PM strawberry he is appaerentally getting 2 12's so space shouldn't be a problem. http://www.sailinganarchy.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=344 56

Not used Airex I'm afriad, so cant comment... Might try and find some samples from somewhere to have a poke.
I don't think the skiffs are for Stuberry! I'm not sure how they would look with a spice kite stuck on the front ![]() |
