Speaking as someone with children, a wife who's a teacher and pressure on time... If the nationals are outside school holidays and take up a week they wouldn't make it onto the family 'what are we planning to do this year list' I'm afraid if classes want to attract families they are tied to school holidays like the rest of us.

I also think there's a need to make nationals more family friendly for the non-sailors that are forced to tag along.

We're more tied in with holidays for our Nationals in Australia, especially with the distances to travel to some events (5500km round trip for a Perth event from here in Adelaide). So Easter and the Christmas/New Year period are our Nationals times. You do find that some classes will shuffle dates so that the class jumping can happen.

In the Cherubs in my day we found that scheduling the Champs outside school holidays equalled a 30%+ drop in turnout. You can spot the years if you look at the YY Champs figures...

Interestiingly in Australia it seems as if just about every class has their Champs the same week. None of this "sailmaker hopping from class to class" stuff...

When we scheduled the RS300 nats for may, there was a bit of an outcry as it was "too early", tho the Blazes had a very successful champs at about the same time...some people are a bit fixed in their ideas on when a champs should happen!

We earliest we ever go is the bank holiday at the end of May - the first time we had little choice but people liked it so we kept similar timing.  More recently it has been in early June - this year its 23/24/25 June.  And we always run the Inlands in October.   Regulars like to do a more relaxed sailing week or so in mid Summer with family or friends and there's usually less wind then anyway hence the popularity to go earlier - cos we do really like a bit of a real breeze for our nationals if we can get it !.  The recent attendance numbers seem to suggest it works for us anyway ....

Ours are a lot earlier, next month, last year were sometime in late july i think. Might be a bit more wind round this time of year rather than in the middle of the summer

There appears to be a big event clash in the week of July 31st - August 4th. The following events are all scheduled:

Enterprise Worlds, 505 Worlds, GP14 Worlds, Scorpion Nationals, Fireball Nationals, Solo Nationals.

There must be plenty of sailors who'd like to do more than one of these events. I realise there aren't 52 weeks available for sailing championships in the UK, but it must be possible to spread events around a bit more than this. There's hardly ever any decent events in May and June. Why not the beginning of July or Easter?

Are the school holidays really so important in planning dates? Most of the sailors taking part in championship weeks will be adults with full time jobs, so unless they are teachers, presumably they have to take a week's holiday to do an event at the end of July, the same as they would in May or June.
