Annoyingly you can't embed Facebook videos, so you'll have to follow the link, but it's well worth a little watch on a Friday morning. Think it must be a highlight from last winter.

Only 2 weeks to go to my regular Winter sailing fix. Thanks for the reminder, Tom.

I was chatting to a guy from our club who had sailed on an 18 recently, needless to say it sounded seriously impressive. Apparently they have two rigs and can choose which at will. They use the big rig (which is, apparently, around 110-120 m2 offwind) in up to 8 knots...... TBF, singlehanded I'm powered up in 6-8 knots in the Spice but that's only a piddling 38m2 with the kite up.....

In a spice that's because of the awful hull shape are pushing water rather and trying to go sideways rather than forward.

The 18's with full rig sailed up through our club race at Lee last Saturday with the biggest rigs on and they did look superb and so powerful in what was light and patchy conditions. For some reason they did not push into the beach as close as I was in the Phantom ! Very strong tide last weekend here on the Solent.

Sounds like a good weekend. I enjoyed a strong and gusty Sunday Blaze sailing at L&LSC so only slightly envious

They had four rigs for a short time. And as for the current big rigs....pah!!!!! They should have tried a real big rig boat (ie mast up to 42' ish) before the rules changed. I only did it once, but that won't stop me being pretentious. ![]() ![]() Edited by Chris 249 - 02 Oct 18 at 10:05am |

Bradmill. When she won the "worlds" on the open waters off Brisbane she added wing extensions to her wing extensions, and ended up about 30ft from wingtip to wingtip.
![]() Chesty Bond (above) and other contenders did the same trick, but Brownie had bought all the carbon tape in the city and Adam South, Chesty's forward hand, reckons that was the reason they couldn't reinforce their foils. Under the huge power of 40'+ rigs and about 30ft beam, Chesty broke her centreboards and Bradmill won. Brownie's next boat, Entrad, had the price of a complete J/24 spent on tank testing her aft sections. Needless to say, such expenses almost killed the class.

Those rigs are outrageous!
What have been the principle rule changes? I've heard the hulls are one design now and rigs number limited, but there are difference between national fleets.
