It seems I need to check that the boom has an inner sleeve? I don't know when this was introduced.

![]() This is the first time I have tried to upload a photo so I hope it works! This photo was taken a long time ago whenever the new controls rules were announced and this was my "cheapskate" version. The downhaul outhaul deck cleats were clam cleats mounted on a piece of plywood which was screwed into the existing deck screw holes, so no extra holes into the deck. It is not easy to see in this photo, but the outhaul block at the mast is held in a long rope loop. The loose end of the loop went through itself and then looped over the gooseneck before the boom is fitted, so comes apart easily and is not attached permanently to the mast. The kicker, as I hope you can see, reuses the old fittings. The harken cheek blocks on the jamming end of the kicker were from the spares box, and are the only ones that I could find that would fit. The clevis pin attaching the jamming block to the swivel was replaced with a longer one that held one end of the cheek blocks, and the other end was secured with a bolt. The system worked well |

My plan is to take a file to the v jammer so that it will cleat at an angle closer to the horizontal...…..maybe...…..have old Laser blocks will experiment.

I think getting away from the V-jammer would be nice. But is it >£100 nice? With 12:1 and a loop handle, I'm pulling on a lot of string, so a v-jammer will be awkward as you'd be cleating from a long way back. I feel a rummage through the metal scrap coming on...

I have the same issue and because our club is moving to family cruising dinghies such as Lugger and Wayfarer no money to spend on old club Lasers. So I will be doing this. https://sailingforums.com/threads/upgrade-rigging.34296/ When I get past all the other summer jobs. Should be easy I will only have to buy swivels, cheap rwo ones will do.

I notice the Holt version is still around, some on eBay for £135 (291831940727) Not as good as the Harken granted but possibly better than a DIY Edit: £116 from Whitstable marine

Thanks, I'd seen some others, but not the Barton one. The barton one is based on a swivel block with cam cleat at over £50, whole kit is over £100. Ideally it would come off the mast without spanners, as some people change rig sizes. Makes the Laser/Harken base unit look 'reassuringly expensive' rather than total rip off. Like most older dinghy people I have a sackfull of random parts in the loft.Including suitable cleats. I was looking for an ultracheap solution for 'improvers' who are basically going nowhere with the old skool kit. It's kind of messy to spend three figure sums on 'shed' Lasers, when it's maybe more sensible to trade up the whole boat. The other option is just to go irreversibly out of class, which could do the job very easily on free stuff, but it would be good to keep to the same principles and 'feel' as the gen-u-wine kit. I'm not sure how important it is that the cleat on the Harken pivots around a vertical axis. I can't be the only DIYer to look at this? |

Didn't take too long to find this on the web:
I think you could base your home build off it, or get one.

I think the only solution is to bite the bullet and buy a proper one.
The Harken one is very good and will last for ever ....

Any thoughts on good solutions for a cheap 12:1 or so kicker for a Laser? For training/club PY racing so not worried about 'legality'. Ideally similar in use to the official model, so when you get in a real Laser it's all familiar. Most of it is clearly easy to cobble together from the spares box, the issue is some sort of cleat-block combo that's not too expensive. Anyone made their own?
