Hi All We had our regatta at the weekend and had a mixed format of 3 races on Saturday with committee boat start, windward leeward for Asymmetric and triangles for single handers with a few visitors including Aero's and D zero (shame more of the later did not make the effort as it was supposed to be a southern event for them). Sunday was club line running (good for a giggle but better than hitting the cockle bank) starts and sausage triangle. 3 races. Well done to Roger and Simon Coles who blitzed all in there 49er (is Roger the oldest 49er crew at 65 and bloudy good he is to) in the asymmetrics. Fernando Gamboa won the Single handers. A Great weekend of racing and a BBQ with no rain! Join us next year at the friendly club in Lee on Solent.

Lymington do the town regatta but earlier in the season, there are also a few trophy races. During the winter their perishes series is open to all.

They also have a new less steep and wider launching ramp.

Shoreham Sailing club offer a temporary/day membership at £10 a time with a max of 4 visits (and has free parking!). We have a committee boat start out at sea every Sunday starting at 1100hrs, with two races back to back. Depending on numbers we split in two fleets - fast and medium handicap and have a mix of boats to race against. All visitors welcome but ideally get in touch before you come as we would like to identify someone who will be around on that day to welcome you. All the info is on the website: http://www.shorehamsailing.org/ Photo from two Sundays ago. ![]() |

Back at my old SE coast club we used to have longstanding arrangements with two inland clubs which allowed a form of temporary membership in the summer on the coast for the inland club members, and in the winter inland for the coastal members. While a small hardy band used to set off every winter from us to break the freshwater ice, I can only remember one summer visitor from either of the inland clubs in my years as secretary. And he never went back!

Most club based Dinghy Weeks allow day entries as well as week long series entries. E.g. "Fed Week" at Chichester from 13th to 17th August.

Fair enough, but I can think of 'regattas' which have been good fun, but not something I'd drive far for. Also consider just paying day rate membership? Try Stokes Bay http://www.stokesbay-sc.co.uk/day-membership/ £12 plus you get torched for parking by the council IIRC. No connection, except I was a member sometime last century... Maybe others can suggest other clubs who offer similar? How is that two hander asy coming along?

RS .... If you read the original request again ...... it was about being able to sail at all ! Many inland clubs offer little more than shallowing water and rising weed at the moment. It is not about 'pot hunting' or finding 'serious' racing at this club or that at all. Besides if events are described as 'OPEN' it suggests that the locals are inviting 'non-locals' along surely ?? If they want just the 'other lot' 2 miles away across the bay to come along they could simply invite them along directly. Or am I missing something here ? Dinghy Weeks - fine but there are only so many weeks away possible. Many inland types are only trying to find a few day or weekend coastal events to fill in the weekend gap opening up ... If you like a reverse of a few from the coast doing winter events or series inland each year.

To be fair, some coastal clubs have 'regattas' which are a bit less serious and marketed at their own members and neighbouring clubs. With more emphasis on socials than racing sometimes. Serious racing is open meetings and 'dinghy weeks'. Sometimes it's more about relations with other local clubs than getting the max number of visitors.(There's only so much beer!) You wouldn't want to attract people into driving a long way to find the standard of racing and race management is 'not too serious'. It pays to target your event, if you don't want either pot-hunter bandits or high maintenance beginners not fitting in and being disappointed. Best to talk to people and maybe study last years results.
