Hi,

Bit of help and advise from people who probably more than me. Currently selling phantom, I'm 6ft 1" and 14st, looking to replace phantom, considering RS100?? what other boats are worth considering? would like a weta, but haven't got £8k plus, I used to sail on river dart at Dittasham, but gone back to River teign at Teignmouth, so an estuary/river, but Paignton Harbour just down the road.

Thanks

J.J.

Why you selling the phant? I have to declare an interest here but what about Devoti D Zero? Not sure of your reqts given that you'd have  a Weta but also considering a 100..

just really like the idea of a little trimaran looks lots of fun but not going to happen though, selling phantom as very few in south west,(but have spent fair bit of time and effort, upgrading all the controls)did contact rs ref areo, don't think better half would be keen on me putting extra £2-£3k into a boat.

If you want something more common then it has to be a Laser or Solo. Might consider a Blaze or OK if you just fancy a change. Get a Zero if you're tempted by the Aero...

I'm not quite in the same position, but am seriously considering a change to my singlehanded sailing after this years nationals (if I get a pass out for the weekend!). Given that I only sail my 700 about 10 times a year, its a bit of pfaff dealing with drying the spinnaker replacing halyards and elastic and paying a pretty healthy insurance premium so might be in the market for something a bit more simple!
I sail on an estuary and am a similar size at just over 6'1" and 13st and I find myself repeatidly drawn to OKs.
We do have a D-Zero at our club which I'm keen to have a go in, but at the moment it doesn't have the same appeal for me as an OK. I dont know why and perhaps it will change once I've had a few more goes in them.

If you are sailing at Teignmouth though the obvious choice is a Solo given that they have fleet racing in Solos!

JJ

If you do go for an RS100 - then Starcross has a fleet with 5 or 6 boats out most weekends sailing windward/leeward and seem to be having fun (and are competitive on handicap against the other assy classes). Not too far up the road from Teign.  Several TCYC members join for the winter series.

Hi Craiggo
Sounds like you need to buy the Phantom ideal for your size.
Sorry to see you JJ leave the fleet but I sail mine as the only boat at my club and Travel to find other phantoms to race against. It suits me at my size and not having to worry about crews.

then you'd be joining the hidden gem of the dinghy sailing scene imnsho..... but beware, it has a dog of a handicap, and you may just find yourself drawn into some of the best singlehanded circuit racing going on right now- standard response to the handicap issue from a lot of OK sailors tends to be 'f**k it'.

Hi,

Thanks for all comments, had no interest at all yet, no really expecting much yet, but it is on for top end price for 2004 boat, had good chat with Rodney from suntouched sailboard about D-zero, sounds good, raising extra £2k may not go down well???? have considered blaze, got to try one and rs100, but also thinking about cat sailing again(had dart 18 for a while)would go for the dart/sprint15 instead, but if I do go that would do bit more training, but then could go windsurf way again.

But if you're selling the Phantom because there seem to be few in the SW, are there likely to be more D Zeros or Aeros or whatever? According to the PY data the Phantom is one of the most frequently sailed classes in the country, and realistically almost any singlehander other than Solo or Laser is going to have fewer boats about unless you can actually find a local hotspot, which is rather unlikely with a new class.
