most of the money would go towards the development of the boats and crews and not just on building a one off monster with no tangible trickle down benefits to the more average sailor.

i reckon because of that and the fact that there would be more competition to develop, the sailing world would benefit faster.

guess you could build and develop 4 or 5 ac45s for the price of 1 big boat.

They'd be able to build several bespoke 45's for the price of the 72 anyway, I'd have thought.

How much more would a development version of the AC45 cost compared to the One Design, I wonder? Materials wouldn't be a vast amount different - say 1/3 more? Time and manpower on the design and testing side would be the killers, I guess.

Just open the whole design up for the AC, but keep the parameters - no self respecting billionaire is going to want the same hulls as the opposition for the cup itself.

they should just stick to the 45 for the next ac anyway, just allow new open design of wings and foils for the actual ac, but od for the world series

It'll be interesting to watch a bunch of them fleet racing on foils - suddenly upwind angles, speed and height will be very critical indeed.

I think you'll find the AC45's back in 2015, once they've announced the kit / venue for the 35th AC. My hunch is they'll fit hydrofoils to the AC45's for a 2015-16 World Series ahead of the Louis Vuitton Cup / America's Cup in 62' foiling catamarans in San Francisco in 2017.
