1. The facade of the prohibitive cost to keep the chavs out (sorry, but having seen the sh1tes that hang out along our river, I'm glad I'm not into fish murdering)

2. The variety on offer- there are so many options, giving so many opportunities for people to enrich their lives from sailing dinghies- be that technical, physical, mental, team skills etc

3. Class racing- the backbone of the dinghy racing ethos

4. The physicality- it doesn't feel like a ball ache if you choose a sensible boat; the exercise is a secondary benefit

5. The RYA... if you look at their output across the board they do an amazing job and I'm surprised (and very pleased) it hasn't been quangoed in the nanny state world we live in

6. The life skills... helps to keep everything else in perspective

7. Opportunities to travel... not something I'm planning to take advantage of at the moment, but it's good to know that I could have a retirement enriched by some fantastic sailing programmes.

8. Family time... sailing doesn't have to be about segregation of the generations, although I'd admit that theres some issues with that from time to time.

9. Capsizing... no one is immune, even those 'muppets' in the Qingdao medal race ;-)

10. Friendship and mutual understanding... I've never met anyone who sails who I'd genuinely call a t**ser, even if we've disagreed on something.

Did you know it is a proven fact that if you ask someone to draw up a long list of reasons why they like something, the more they will begin to doubt that they actually do like it.

What was your stat sample size for that assertion Toby, or did your Mum tell you so it must be true?

Yeah, yeah. I'm a killjoy. I read it in a book, so it must be true! The same book, incidentally, that warns of small sample sizes.

Maybe I need a new book...

Anyway, I like:
1. The solitude
2. The fresh air/wind/rain
3. The fluid mechanics
4. A breezy broad reach
5. Trying to get a decent start
6. Trolling forums
7. Looking at boats
8. Running out of ideas now...
9. Ummm...
10. Maybe I don't like it as much as I thought. Told you!

1) Setting things up just right and hitting the sweet spot
2) The people
3) Being able to take a boat apart and put it back together (maybe!) and know exactly what makes it tick
4) I can be unfit yet still compete - it is a thinking sport
5) The variety of weather, courses, locations
6) Just so many different boats to sail - one for every mood
7) The post sailing beer with friends
8) Sailing with family
9) Sailing without family
10) Winning

And no, that has made me want to sail more, not less - as did the other list.

Supposedly, sailing starts again at Whitefriars on Sunday. Might be a bit chilly?
