We might be thinking about making our 49er fully foil at some point. I've researched the subject and don't worry, we won't rip the transom off the boat. Anybody interested in the project? |

Ive seen a couple of pictures of a 49er trying to foil but the word at the time was that it was totaly uncontrolable IIRC

Going foiling on a 49er sounds like it will be very wild ride indeed. Having watched a couple of Moths at Grafham yesterday the landings look fairly harsh and staying on the wire in similar situations I think will be a challenge ! There is video around of an International 14 foiling and it looks like a good giggle ! Might be worth trying a B14 first as the landings will be less messy! If you do decide to go the 49er route, can I come and watch please |

Agreed, I think thats the biggest problem to get round. Sat on the wing of a moth you can lock yourself into the boat quite well, I wouldnt fancy crashing from the wire at all though, I think it would really redifine the phrase 'world of pain' I believe Linton Jenkins, of Fullforce Boats fame was experimenting with a foiling RS600 but as ive heard no more of it I guess it was not a great success. If anyone in the country understands how to make hydrofoils then its that chap so I can only assume the failure was down to the boat being unsuitable, very probibly because of the wire. Having said that if anyone knows anymore about the project please feel free to correct me, What I know is only from rumors really. A B14 on the other hand... now theres an idea.... Ive no idea how much they weight but on first impresions id say they have a lot greater foiling potential than 9ers. |

im still up for it! it doesnt take much speed to get the moths foiling any way and the crashing doesnt happen when you get into how to work the foils, the "harsh landings" only occur when the centre foil cavitates, sudently loosing lift and falls back down, you learn a feel for your ride height and control it thorugh the rudder foils, with practice, its not so hard

The previous attempt made to foil a 49er was reasonably successful. The only problem was the wing on the rudder was too far up the foil. I reckon if the wings on the rudder and daggerboard are almost in line with each other, there won't be too much of a problem. It has to be tried

does indeed, You can quite easily have it set up the same as the moth with the foil at the base of the foil, and then the trailing endge of the foils doing the movement! its proven to work so why experiemtn with that and waste potential air time...
