That's as in 'alternative to actually having a rudder system on the boat'!

Do you have class rules that allow winged rudders, by the way?

Hi 400 ...

Not quite sure what you are trying to say here .... we (Cirrus) have been as clear as possible  within the context of going through a development process partly under the forum spotlight.  If we are going to clear up any semantic issues 'alternative' as used here refers to 'different types of'  ....  but equally I do understand any sarcasm here given his loss of rudder at the IOS race !  Give him some credit however for sailing back several miles sans anything on the back of '04' at all and without help.

We, plus Peaky as the first class secretary, have looked at different types and have already settled on a conventional pivoting rudder blade for all sorts of good reasons.

Mike L.

PS - Do we need / allow wings ? .... No

That was the first time I have done rudderless sailing since my DI course back in 94! Upwind, in a boat I'd only sailed once and a crew who I'd only met that morning - I was quite proud of getting back unassisted. It really highlighted the importance of sailing dead flat and how heel is can be used to steer the boat.

we even turned down the offer of a tow from the somewhat bemused firemen (out with their rib helping on safety cover)

I can't help wondering why Mike chose not to sail the Icon, it's a long and boring slog round that island single handed and he surely doesn't have to prove anything other than the Blaze is now a bandit, does he? Wink

Greame  ....

Never mind ... I'm sure we can arrange for you to borrow a Blaze next time .....  LOL  We know you'd love one again really.  That old flame is still flickering for you isn't it ?  You just can't stop mentioning 'her' (it ?) at every opportunity ...

Taking your point seriously for a moment (but goodness knows why ?)  FYI The IOS race is a Blaze CA 'supported event'.  While not a main travellers circuit one for us we do actively encourage Blazes (and Halo rigged ones) to enter each time.   This has been the case for a few years now and as a result the Blaze is possibly the single most popular boat by numbers competing (well it does very well anyway even if it is not).  As builder I am expected to support the Blaze occasionally and they have missed me a bit given the near totol Icon committment of recent months  !

Tell you what maybe next year Cirrus will lend you a Blaze (keeps the numbers up - and think of the 'sport' for the other Blazes - a real scalp to hunt down) and you can drool over 'her' as well for the day.  And I'll drag 'Andy' the farmer (crew) out of the cab of his combine harvester and Icon it.   ... or will you still be working on the master plan and 'sandbag' a high PN for that 'V' bomber of yours over the next year before turning all bandit on the day ?

See you at the Draycote Dash ?   If 'Andy' has stopped flitting around the darkening Autumn fields by then planting for next year and can be persuaded I'll bring an Icon along .... surely the 'Bomber' will be ready for real action by then ?

Mike L.

It's a fine boat the Blaze do you hear me saying anything bad about it? It wasn't the boat it was the company I was thinking and anyway kindly you have answered and in truth I had forgotten it was  blaze event and a very good one for it I guess. Yes I certainly rued the day I traded it for the 100 but I may just have built myself something better, fingers crossed..

AS a footnote the guy that bought it may end up in the club trophies this year for the first time in a long while and he loves it (unless it's light weather but then he's a big boy).

Yes hopefully the new single handed 'Wayfarer' will be ready for Draycote Wink

well Graeme if it's lard boy weather and you need some rail meat to pull the kite sheets for the V-Twin I'm sure we can find someone for you!

And Mike- looking forward to seeing the Icon at Draycote, I think the course should suit her quite nicely.

well if it's windy- lots of us from the windsurf fleet will be there (oddly enough he's 'known' by quite a few of them) so we might get a few crates to get going early.... hmm, wonder if DWSC can relax the no windsurfing day tickets at weekends thing, might be a few other vistors up for getting stoopidly cold between the beers.

I'll be there with a plank regardless of the wind, catch up time and Russy and Olly promise to be drinking = messy... hoping to finally have a ride on D-One at a lunchtime (note to self, remember floaty jacket thingy that helps trap you under the sail if you capsize)
