dumb question coming up:
why do people on yachts drop the jibs when using the kite? *hides due to his obvious stupidity* t |

Because the jib gets in the way of the wind going into the spinnaker, so this makes the spinnaker more effiecient. Although a good technique to point higher with a running kite is to keep a small genoa up, No3/4 as a bit of a staysail. |

Needs to sail more...

Aye. it's more a case of "why don't dinghies drop their jibs when using spinnakers?"- with the obvious answer being that it's not usually practical to do so. I have seen though in light winds most of a 2000 fleet furl their jibs downwind. |

It depends if you are sailing a displacement boat. On a displacement yacht several things happen downwind. 1. you very quickly hit hull speed and therefore 2. you never really enter into the realms of apparent wind sailing. In this mode you want maximum projected area and a jib will either be hidden by the main or will interfere with the flow on the kite.
In a planing dinghy the apparent wind will come around forward of the beam at which point the aerodynamic profile of the sails generates the power rather than simply catching the wind, and therefore none of the sails is blanketed and they are all providing drive. Once in this configuration you also benefit from a triplane effect, where for a given planform area the lift generated is massively increased. For dinghies sailing deep downwind in light airs there is benefit in furling the jib, as in the L2000, but furling gear has disadvantages in that its difficult to get sufficient forestay tension without locking up the drum, and battens dont like being wound around a forestay, so in practice its best to put up with the jib flapping around behind the main. |
