How many times must he say "From a British perspective........" What does he think the first B in BBC stands for!!!!
That said, we are all experts in what we know and will always spot stuff that the commentators miss, but they have to sit there for hours on end and have been charged with trying to make sailing exciting for everyone. It would have ben great if BA had done a Cavendish on gropper Rob tho! Turn the sound off and read the Y+Y live feed - we seem to be able to get away with quite a lot on there!

My favourite Simmonds quote must be when he was doing the Americas Cup race between The cat and the tri. On the first beat we had just seen the Oracle wing masted tri sail from 200 m. behind and dead to leeward of Alinghi, to 50m. abrest and to windward of Alinghi. Simmonds then says " its neck and neck between the 2 boats its going to be a great race". He must have been really surprised when Oracle did a horizon job on Alinghi! I can't work out if he is clueless or just trying to hype it up! - I suspect the former.

If you feel strongly enough about this then the only option is to complain, the BBC do have an online system which is a little long winded but its is seen as the "way to do it" these days, I'm sure I've read somewhere they work on the principle that for every one complaint there are 1000 who didnt complain but felt the same???

+1 I’ve not seen any of the windsurfing, so haven’t heard this Simon chap. Rob Walker is very enthusiastic – but his arms on Ben interview was cringy. Richard Simmons sounds like Simon Mayo, but he talks in clichés and catchphrases, and repeats the same two or three things over and over and over again. Please find something else to say! Leigh McMillan – fine, but not great Shirley – I think she’s done well, but has a difficult job on an isolated RIB. Just please, don't mention how many gold medals she has! The swimming guys (Andy Thompson and Adrian Moorhouse) have been excellent. I don’t especially care for swimming, but their commentary has been fun and informative, and they seem to actually have expert knowledge of the competitors. Can we get Richie Benaud? |

There are plenty of confident, well presenting top Brisith sailors out there who could do a far better job than Simmonds.... Ian Walker, Pom Green, Nick Rogers, Sarah Ayton, Sarah Webb, Sten, Ian Williams for Elliots, Alex Thompson, even Dee or Dame Ellen would be better..... it wouldn't take much to find the right calibre of person to step up, it's not football where the only bloke on the pitch with a GCSE or two is Frank Lampard.
There's also a number yachting journos that could put on a good show- James Boyd or Andy Rice for example. Gael's tweets have been pretty spot on throughout, so imo she seems somewhat under-utilised with only a twitter feed for live commentary! If I had Auntie's budget, I would be hooking up with the specialised media outlets for certain sports, Y&Y being the natural home for sailboat racing.

At best the sailing commentary on the BBC can only be described as puerile, simplistic, clueless drivel. I'm sure Simmonds must have some abilities at something, but commentating on sailing ain't one of 'em. The best commentary that I'm aware of was the contribution made by Simon Bornhoft, who gave some brilliant technical insight into an RSX race that really helped explain the action & the equipment being used (and I'm not a board sailor). Sadly the Finns, Lasers, 470s etc haven't been given the same quality of service by anyone. So far as the stupid, cringeworthy "joker", "turbocharger" type comments go, surely someone at the BBC must realize this sort of infantile claptrap is totally unacceptable to anyone with an IQ higher than 2.
