These are the second and third rules:

Simplify, then add lightness
If it breaks it's too light, if it doesn't it's too heavy

I guess development classes get driven down this route in the search for marginal gains where as other classes are restricted and as such don't perhaps take such risks with kit

It's gone very quiet.
Word locally was that the yacht was actually in the right.
Video can be very deceptive!

The local word is complete rubbish then.  There are specific by-laws in the solent covering a moving exclusion zone around large vessels. There is no way, no way at all, that the yacht could have been "in the right".

I don't know I'd want to be quite as dogmatic as that. Supposing, for instance, a ship was outside the navigation channel? Doesn't the exclusion zone only apply in the shipping channel? Or supposing a boat had been instructed a ship was turning in one direction, and took a course under the direct instruction of the harbour authorities to avoid its planned course, and the ship then turned in the other direction?

As I said, it's all gone quiet. A few people who I think have real information are being very quiet. But rumour is that Jim is about right. Like many people sailing around here, I am well aware of the Byelaws, most of us could probably do a fair job of reciting them.

I take it that at some point a report will come out?

I disagree, if everyone took that attitude it wouldn't be much point in finishing first either would it?

There's no joy in finishing first if you've never finished last in life.

absolutely- and it has to be said, if you can finish last during every race in a series, then chances are you won't be last overall.  In fact, given that there are a number of sailing clubs who have problems getting enough people to start enough races to even qualify for a series, then there's a good chance that finishing last in every race can get you in the chocolates too LOL

Somewhat surprised at this attitude from you, to be honest

I think Jim may have been looking at things from a building for lightness/is it strong enough perspective, rather than from a sailing ability one. If you build a boat in a development class which is incapable of ever doing anything but come last, then there is little point in even starting, let alone finishing.
