When I was 15, I was lucky enough to be bought a laser, which I wanted because everyone else that age at the club had one. In our club racing we had each other to race against, even if everyone else had disappeared into the distance. Over the next few years, this group of people stopped sailing the laser, most of them sailing altogether. I'm sure this will sound familiar to a few others. Since the laser I have sailed several different boats, all more enjoyable purely as a boat to sail. I shall not be going back to the laser, but I do miss the boat that I could race in any wind, and always have a group of similar boats to race against. In 5 years I broke 1 mast, which took less than a week to have replaced under insurance. There is only really one fleet of boats at my club now, which just wouldn't work for me. Every boat I have owned since, has been the only one racing at the club. They have all been enjoyable to sail, but less so to race, and they have all fallen apart on a regular basis. The laser is a world away from being a perfect boat, but provided me, and I bet many others, with some enjoyable racing. |

Most people are not sl*gging it off. The post you quote actuall does the opposite I think.

ob1...IF you think the laser is a perfect boat please explain why. I think you will find even the guys competing for olympic medals wouldnt describe the laser as being perfect.
I think Foiling_Toff has hit the nail on the head with the final part, It has provided many with many years of enjoyable racing

Was the whole point of this thread not to give us a neutral location to sl*g the laser without diverting other threads from their course? Which would explain why people keep sl*gging the laser...

I endorse everything said about lasers.....must be good to last so long, 3 billion people can't be wrong etc. But, pole vaulters don't use alloy poles anymore, footballs are no longer leather and swimmers no longer wear floppy cossies. Of course we need basic simple boats for level competition but even the venerable GP updates its self. Juniors at our club look enviously at our 2 Byte C2's with their 29er ish sails. Gardiner Diesel Engines were the best in the world, no one argued, but when Scandinavian high reving turbo diesels arrived those old Gardiners disappeared very quickly. Don't get too complacent, everything comes to an end under the relentless surge of development.

Quite, but I wouldn't mind betting that the Laser (or an antipodean cousin!) will be around for some time to come.
Much the same that fencing is still done with Epee's, Foils and Sabres rather than some new fangled star wars type laser sword.

Yes but probably the materials used in fencing have improved over the years. I am not suggesting that Lasers be electrified, just updated!
Mind you don't swords bleep when you hit somebody? The Three Musketeers never had that! By the way. I lost my registration and when I re registered the forum it wanted me to be what I was before. tickel/tickler. Very odd. |
