Dreadfull on the Medway last Sunday. We worked our way down river in a little wind and slack water, the course was shortened at one of the marks and we raced back against the strengthening tide. At one of the corners the wind died and we went backwards. We did finish eventually but "out of time", many of our competitors finished or were towed in after we'd had our lunch! The afternoon race was abandoned just as a little breeze came in.

just had a weekend at rutland with about 40 people from or club. everything from torrential rain and a gust that wiped out the whole fleet, to force one with sunburn inducing sun. 6 RYA toppers gave the kids and some of the adults a load of fun, 2 Picos, 2 nationals, an ent, scorpion, a couple of lasers, a 49er, a windsurfer and a 22 ft drayscomb trailor sailer made an interesting fleet to keep together. thanks to the people there for being so friendly, and the rescue crews planing to the 49er every time they decided to take a swim. this was quite often. it is going to be a long time though till they live down the fact the lead boat was an enterprise..... opps ...... on a serious note. any club wanting to have a good weekend away, 45 beds in the accomodation at rediculously low prices, plenty of boat parking (we took over about 1/5 of the car park) friendly people, and a superb piece of water to sail on means that you can get the wives, the kids, the grandmothers and the teenagers all on boats, all having a scream, and all coming in with a grin on their face. I reccomend it. |

Medway Marathon. I don't know for sure but there must have been 100 boats in about 4 starts. Very light winds for the Fast Handicap which started at 11:30. At one point we were the leading boat except for Mark and Simon in the 2 International Canoes. Unfortunately as we tried to cross the river in a foul tide the wind disappeared and boats that crossed earlier passed ahead and those behind who were still in the shallows passed from behind. We fought back and the rivals in our class (Laser 4000s) retired as did many others. It was flukey - for example we left the 29ers way behind and then suddenly they crossed as a pack in front of us in a nice breeze (relatively nice - about f2). Wow that tide runs hard and fast and there is barely a moment of slack water between flows - this is not the best place to be on a long distance race in no wind. Eventually the MYC laid a finish towards the end of the river and some of us made it before the deadline of 5pm. We required a tow home against the tide which was now flowing in the opposite direction. We were afloat for about 8 hours and raced a course which must have amounted to 15 miles. Not a classic Marathon. God knows where we came on handicap. |

Another depressingly dull weekend in sailing terms. Arrived at the club yesterday morning to be greated by a nice F3 but from the East. In typical fashion as the day got warmer the sea breeze cancelled it all out. By the time the sea breeze won through, there was no water left to play on !!!!
So far this year I reckon I've only had two days of perfect F4-5 conditions, its either been light and sh*te or howling ! |

Was at the London Youth Games with a team of sailors who did remarkably well on Saturday. Sunday was back at the club taking boats off trailers and then decided to take the centres Laser Bahia out for a spin with the kite and a trapeezer! was fun but what a pants boat! |

The Medway Marathon was hard work. With hindsight I should have turned back at bouy 13, that way I would have had a couple of hours good racing with the Squibs, I was single handing a Miracle and competing well with them - leading at times, and then had the rest of the day doing something more enjoyable than battling the tide. Once the wind had died it wasn't really racing anymore but a test of perseverence. It didn't help that I ran out of time a few yards from the line, though a finish would have been pretty academic in terms of results. At least I wasn't in my Contender, that would have been really hard work. Edited by No. 5 |
