I take it you have paid the appropriate fees to the class association in NZ for the plans? And will be wanting to join the association over here when it is set up ![]() |

Think you boys should build your boats first and then worry about details of the administration... Those of us who've spent time in some of the existing box rule classes can tell you from experience that there's never any shortage of people telling you "well I would get one if you change this" but rather fewer who actually get one if you do...
As Jack says I would counsel being very wary indeed about making big changes to the standard construction because it will be an awful lot easier to change things for the worse rather than the better. |

I think that instead of a class association there should be an owners club. Sounds less formal!
I personally reckon the hull should be strict one design with a minimum weight, then open design of foils, a mast cap, and max length pole and boom lengths to give a bit more freedom of sail shape. I'm not in a position to build for a while though so crack on without me! |

Cheers Mr Sparrow, I'll take you up on that !
Ahhhhhh, the end plating thing is something I know all about, but by a different name (see the winglets on my C17 Globemaster). Totally agree that very careful consideration must be given before deviating from what is a proven, lasting design - was just kicking around ideas ( GRF style) to see if improvements could be made... |

What I refer to as "these" is of course the Bruce Farr designed single handed with trapeze 3.7m hull, modified to include a spinnaker pole. The rig will be a design of my own. And I will certainly not be adding any unnecessary weight. |

Booty.... Study the structure under the foredeck a bit more, then think. I'm planning on cutting this in half. And ask yourself where is the structural strength now going to come from whilst maintaining the low weight the boat currently has. If you can think of an answer, start a yacht design business because you are at least as good as Bruce Farr was when designed the 3.7. ![]() End plating Isn't relevant in this discussion as there is no jib. But buy butting up a 90 degree surface to a wing ( a foredeck in sailing) you improve the aerodynamic efficency of the wing by stopping the flow from exiting off the end in a turbulent fashion. That's a very simplified discription there are plenty of pages on the Internet that explain it better. Build the boat as is, from the plans, you'll love it. Better still come and sail my one first. |
