top mast sealed , external halyard, easier to right after capsize, you offer
me the opportunity to have you enjoy the beatiful sail shape resulting from
mast sail combination.....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uxI1YsslmAY

Sorry if this is buried elsewhere in the thread and has been asked before, but there is a lot of talk about £, so how much to buy one?

It looks a bit of a thoroughbred to me so appreciate it may not be cheap if it is built like Devoti boats I have come across in the past.

Doug , you are 100 % right.....though this vid done by a passionate sailor is
interesting to see how the rig works, what we found kind of unexpectedly is
that the kite by inverting the mast forward deepens the main and so the
boat keeps balanced on the rudder upwind and downwind, ie you do not
need to push the boat to windward under kite once the main is properly
trimmed with the traveller in the middle and that allows at times amazing
speeds downwind...if you go to www.devoti-one.com you can see some
more amazing pics done by francois richard and if you observe tiller position
you can see the rudder always neutral under kite..luca devoti

Why?

Because it amuses me, and I don't like boats that discriminate against my
size or my sailing area and this is an ugly lake sailing lard boys ride..

Ok to put a link to your website as a footer to your posts though is it?

"Sigh" I thought all that nonsence was put to bed.

There are far more discriminatory boat designs out there, that's just silly.

I seriously doubt that designers sit down with a view to really upset a load of people who their boat would be unsuitable for.

My point is only that I can't see your point!

Nice post James:-)

I have to say that the rather crass slanging of the D1 as being ugly just makes me want to defend the boat and Luca's efforts, even though I have absolutely no links to him or his company and, for a combination of reasons, I am more likely to end up buying the RS100.

Aesthetics are a matter of taste and so what is ugly to some, is beautiful to others.

i have been pretty active on this forum recently because after properly
investigating i came to the conclusion that this battle of the
aestethics.....is just orchestrated .devotisailing will not follow this route,
we are passionate about the sport, and prefer trying to do our job the
best we can, even in france and the states forums where artificially
poisoned with the same arguments....and it has been well done.leaving
unfair marks.though the reality of the boats sailing is sweeping all away,
see pics on our website.fact is that andy rice was one of the six jurno that
tested the boat, and i invite you to reread entirely his test that we have on
our website finishing his article with the worlds : when it sails it certanly
looks the part and sails the part!!!!!! www.devoti-one.com,he liked the
boat a lot to the point that he came and sailed our first regatta , from
those journalists four expressed the interest in buying the boat,or race it,
biggest compliment i could ever expect, we do not spend a lot of money
in pubblicity being a small passionate boatbuilding company, one of the
journalist manon borsi is a lady that sailed europe.i invite you to go and
see her test.it is a real pity that instead of broadening the base of the
sport, this type of battles just tend to schrink it and to reduce the appeal
of the sport. i have already seen all this before with the musto skiff..even
at that time with tim tavinor we where innovating..though this time being
the d one a more sofisticated and expensive boat there sould be room
enough for all other boats that will follow in the market. one last
remark, up to now not even one d one sailor has complained about the
boat , to the contrary they are all suprhappy and approximate average
weight of the sailors is about 80 kg,i will spare the reprint of all the email
i have.but as i have said before tanti nemici tanto onore

Hi Luca, don't get down about the D1 sl*gging, GRF and TurnTurtle obviously have issues about it so just ignore them, you can try and justify your views by dressing it up as a long thoughtful essay but you know what the end is going to be when you start to read it. It's too predictable. Maybe it's becoming a "class issue" RS products are good, very good, good as in Ford cars are good, but they're never going to be Mercedes good. But then Mercedes are expensive and people know that and yet they still buy them. The Finn and D1 really are aquatic Mercedes, high quality and yes, to my eyes good looking.

Merc have made some pretty damn ugly cars to my eyes

Doesn't mean I wouldn't want one if I had the cash (or was given one)...

I think it is time to put this aesthetics debate to one side ... it is all a matter of personal taste.

Clearly the D1 & the RS100 have arrived to the market at a similar time; the D1 is of course ahead but in the grand scheme of things the same time ...

Regardless of their differences until they have been around for a while the market will see them as the same thing; a hiking asymmetric spinnakered dinghy.

Over time I am sure the qualities of each class will become known by the general sailing public and people will be able to make much more informed decisions as to which boat suits them.

So ... if you are considering being an early adopter of one of these new classes the obvious thing to do is TRY BOTH ... if you don't you may end up wishing you had backed the other horse.

Ultimately the market will decide if both classes make it long-term but in the short term the impact of the marketing campaigns will have a big effect.

This whole debate all feels so familiar …
