Thanks radixon. I admit it was me, but having never sailed in tidal waters with biiig waves and wind against tide before, don't think we did too badly coming second!  Old boat too, 20 year old sails, and a crew I'd only sailed with properly 4 times before.  Interesting sailing area, the trade-off between sailing out of the tide in slightly less wind among the moored yachts v. big tide, big waves but clear water and wind made tactics interesting.  I still see the waves when I close my eyes...

I had the 600 out on saturday and sailed the wrong course, but to be honest the course i ended up sailing was more fun than the real one, i was hardly on the trapeze at all. Sunday i was reminded why i don't sail crewed boats, the crews never turn up.  I had 3 people asking if they could crew the 14 on saturday but none of them were there on time on sunday . so i missed the first race but the second race i had the 600 out for but it was only 10 minutes long cos the race officer wanted to get away and he had to get a third race in . Then a crew turned up for the 14 so i stuck the 600 ashore, dropped the sail and ran to get the 14 on the water in time. Missed the start by about 3 mins and then the gusts along the first leg uner the cliffs were awful, one second twin wiring, the next both crew needed to be inboard, but neither of us could get there. In the ned we gave up and just went reaching around. We really need a kite for 14, but otherwise its good fun. Although we still can't get the goddam boat to point.

olly what was the tacking angle on your 14? that should give me something to aim at.

hmm, i think we are still miles off, yesterday i think we were tacking through at least 90 degrees, probably more, it was hard to tell with all the shifts we had. it might have something to do with a completely shagged main and the monstrous size of the jib in comparison, but beggars can't be choosers and im still playing with all the settings.

A windy Medway this week.  Not quite survival but very fast.  I had a 17 year old experienced crew and was surprised to hear him say things like, "perhaps we should 2 sail the down wind legs".  No chance of course and up went the kite - I don't think we went in on any of the gybes but we lost it on a tack and went into irons a couple of times.  Downwind was wild since there was a bit of a chop and so the boat was leaping about - I do believe the crew used the toe strap (I thought they were decorative).

We thrashed the Osprey even though we gave them a start.  I don't think we are any faster up-wind than this lightweight carbon one but downwind we just fly and as long as we stay upright I think we have them.  We of course have a lot more fun as they are going slowly through the water whilst we are traveling about twice as fast.  The 4000 seems to have the measure of the 29ers too although they go faster than us they don't get the depth and we're just a bit better upwind.

Great racing but very tiring being on the edge all the time, but that's why I do it.

I had a frustrating Sunday, we had a nice breeze before the start, foiled off the startline, then the breeze dropped. That boat is torturously slow when not flying!

Half way through the last race I though sod it, I've got a bbq to get to so went in and packed away, no sooner was the cover on then it blew up again....

Well for us it was more survival and probably the strongest wind we've
encountered and completed the course. The four front runners were the
normal nemesis 470 an RS 400 that had to retire, two lasers locked in
celebrity death match then us with another 470 pushing us and slowly
reeling us all in a laser 2000 with a very experienced guy tutoring a
newbie.

The gusts were viscious downdrafts blowing 6-7 and violently shifting,
we two sailed everywhere although with hindsite we probably could have
risked the chute on the run (Our courses tend to be triangle sausage laps)

Very very hard work but we learned a bit more, pursuing lower angles
upwind rather than letting the gusts push us high unfortunately we didn't
get it dialed quick enough to get into contention and on the penultimate
beat made the fatal mistake of saying "We haven't done bad here getting
this far round without swimming" two seconds later Jumanjis foot lost its
grip on the rail of the boat and we were in to windward.

Although we finished 4th over the water and 5th on handicap it was a
good result considering as we encountered the first black wall of death
wind I'd said we'd better bale on this we'll never make it round..

Even the 470 spilt their coffee occasionally..
