I'm pretty sure the Supernova was taken from a chopped down 505 mould. Look at the bow to see the family resemblance

Seperately, what's the copyright position? People have been making perfect copies of AC Cobras long after the 505 was designed. Is it fair game to take and hack as you like after 50+ years?

Yup, great project for older 5o hulls and agree with Rupert as to the reasons.  There is no vintage / veteran system in place for older 5o's like there are Merlins, so why not have a bit of fun with the old hulls.  Higher boom as well so rather more comfy.

He is however doing what other people have done before. Taken the 505 hull and modified it. I believe there are other designs out there which are more or less streched and chopped versions of the 505.

Speaking to the guy at Southampton he seemed passionate about the boat even if purely as a one off for himself.

Not that I pesonally would want one but it is an interesting concept taken old wreaks of 505 and converting them.

Good way of making a test bed for new ideas, though. If the "swinging bowsprit" works, then it could be an answer for small lakes where current fast asymmetric boats are usually unable to sail to handicap - perhaps on a specially designed hull in the end.

In what way does that constitute an excuse? Surely the opposite: he ought to know better!

Tha vality of the concept of bunging new bits on old classes was nicely settled at the ISAF trials that produced the 49er... the turboed up FD made the Boss and the 5 Tonner look good!

There was one in the Alton Frostbite Series and it went quite well.  I think it has now left for summer pastures but I will ask the owner for details this Sunday if it's still there.

Thanks for the info and the link, chaps!

I agree that the Five-Oh is one of the all time greats (although I prefer the price of a new Hartley Osprey or Jeff Green Javelin to a new 505!), but there are about 1,000 vaguely competitive Five-Ohs and 8,000 wrecks out there.  I cannot imagine 'bastardizing' a new Five-Oh, but I can certainly see modifying an older one.

Still, no class racing...

Except that the guy doing it is a past master in the class ('60's I believe).

There are plenty of old 505's that will never be competitive, maybe never even used again, and he's giving them a new lease of life.

When I was growing up the 505 was THE boat. It was faster with more strings than anything else. It still impresses me to see it sailed well. Got to agree with JimC on this one.
