Squib, SB3? Be serious guys: it needs to be an International Class with worldwide distribution, not a private UK class. Check out the ISAF International classes pages for what keelboat classes fit the bill. None really, unless you want to make the Star a mixed doubles class! The possible alternatives to the Yngling were a J whatsit which is US and satellites only, and the Flying 15, which is Commonwealth only.

You could scrap air rowing, but why throw out windsurfing? Just put a ban on upwind pumping; it's fairly easy to detect upwind pumping, and it changes the nature of the sport and puts the emphasis much more on sailing skill.

If you lose the board, you'll lose the cheapest and most accessible class.

SB3 isn't very international.

Finn lacks in both the performance and widespread popularity front and is too close to the Laser. Some say the IOC head, as an ex Finnster, would find sacrificing his own class a very powerful symbolic move and therefore he may go down that path.

Lobbying is everything in Olympic classes. Many of the classes listed would simply not exist if it wasn't for their Olympic status. The Tornado is popular now but before it got a kite and second trapese it was a boat that got wheeled out every four years, the sailors competing F18s the rest of the time. The Mistral windsurfer, now swapped for the RS-X, was exclusively an Olympic design and the best windsurfers at the time (Dunkerbeck and Naish) were sailing shortboards on slalom courses. Only the Laser and 470 (and now the 49er) seem to be relevant in their own right.

Why not the SB3, theres already a well established international circuit, big sponsership deals.  And best of all, there are all girl teams, all male teams and mixed teams all vying for top.  There doesnt seem to be one reigning force so maybe this could be the option for the keelboat class.

You can not get rid of the 470, it needs to be kept in maybe as a mixed. They should scrap the yngling and star, then bring in a new class where there has to a be minimum of 1 woman and 1 male and a total weight of 300kg or something.

As for the 29erXX going in which would be great but remember the XX is not the only boat that will be at the trials. The standard 29er will be there as it is already a well established class cheaper etc. Which would be like the radial which is a youth and olympic class. Then there will the the RS800, but not ordinary 800. It will have a deck similar to a 49er (very flat, unlike the sit in cockpit at the moment), mainsheet off the boom for the crew to play, wide racks with training bars and possiblity some changes to the rig. Plus i am sure a bunch of other builders will put something together.

what do other people think about the keelboat idea?

opps edited it

The only way I can see a mixed (or open) class increasing the participation of women is if one of the 2 crew had to be female.
