As I wrote before. No idea why a class as prestigious and with such great history (freestanding of the Olypmics) as the Finn, puts soooool much emphasis on being part of it.

Because they know what happens to classes when they lose the Olympic slot, name me one example of a class that has thrived following deselection?

Star

The Europe - admittedly not in the UK where it has never been a big class, even when part of the Olympics, but have a look at International numbers and you'll see that it's huge!

I think the UK view is very different to the rest of Europe in that the FD, 470 and Star had strong domestic fleets whilst they were in the games and have stayed strong since. I think the Tempest still has a following on the big European lakes.
I think the Finn would survive  and in my opinion seems to have found more local fleets with the strong interest in the masters series.
Watching the medal race from the Euro was very interesting, add a couple of Drones and it would be even better.
I think over recent years the trend has been with modern rigs and controls to be able to de power the boats so much dinghy sailing is turning into a lightweights game.

More like a midweight's game, I'd say, for the biggest UK single-handed fleets. More to the point, it is hard to be an outlying weight. You'll do well in certain conditions, but unless a whole series is windy or light, you lose out to the average weights too often to win events regularly. Hence the oddity of the ideal weights in the Radial being different for men and women at international level.

largely due to its fantastic credentials for team racing - meaning 6 get sold per order.

ironic - given it was a singlehander, but this strangely appealing in an anti-establishment manner.

More strange that it was chosen as the Olympic singlehander when it was, presumably, designed as a two man boat.......

Just post war, there weren't many boats which could be produced quickly enough to get a fleet together. The British Moth was also considered, which given a windy week in Torbay, could have been very interesting indeed!
Given that it was considered too hard to sail single-handed and so a new boat designed for 1952, it does seem odd that a boat which needs as much weight single-handed as a Firefly does double-handed was chosen to replace it. However, all these years on, it has, to me, become as much a part of the games as the weights in lifting heavy stuff, or the shot in throwing heavy stuff.
Maybe the Women's singlehander should be a 3/4 scale Finn?

So what was the deal with the exit of the Europe? Women obviously lesser beings than fat men?

Finn was the men's heavyweight dinghy (it's now open I believe...). Europe was the women's singlehander, the equivalent to the laser. It was replaced directly by the radial, i think on cost amongst other things like the global reach of the laser class and circuit.
