You do seem to be reading a lot from a short promo video...
If you want to know what it is like, take one for a sail. Videos like that are for whetting the appitite |

I think you will find thath so many videos show boats reaching, because let's face it's the only point of sail where the Laser is really fun and if you just want to sail for fun it's reach to reach. It's also an area where the lightness will have a big effect. I haven't sailed this iteration, but the previous one sailed upwind well, certainly matched my supernova, albeit it was being well well sailed by Alex from RS.
When I sailed it seemed perfectly good upwind and it never felt as nosy as a laser. Jo and Alex have produced what appears to be a good boat as I am sure have Dan and Luca - the punk is well proven and tested. Whilst I haven't sailed the DZero, they both have there plus points over the other and whilst there all still prototypes, they both are committed to being built. Which would I buy? I honestly have no idea.

If I may act as Devil's Avocado for a moment...a 'promo video' is just that, a 'promoting' tool (from the Greek 'promos' ...to flog stuff (v)). We are just trying to see round the edges of the hype. Actually, my initial reaction, when I saw how light the Aero is, was that it would be a pretty miserable boat to sit in between races if there was a much of a sea.

It certainly makes me want to go dinghy sailing, so I'd say as a promo video it's doing its job nicely.
As for comments about upwind capability... I'll reserve judgement until I see one lined up with a reasonably sailed Laser in a club race. There's nothing in that video to comment on with regards upwind credentials.

Wether it goes upwind or not and I so no reason why it shouldn't, it has achieved finally what I've been cracking on about since I first got here, a trend to lighter boats, maybe some of the other class luddites will finally spot that all that lead is a stupid thing after all and maybe 'lighten up' in their attitude.
Just think what 10 or 20 kilos off a Contender would do. There isn't a boat I've owned that couldn't have done with 10 kilos less weight over all as a minimum, I missed my demo sail last week, I couldn't leave at the drop of a hat and I've blown up my van engine so am relatively immobile at the moment, but I can't wait to get into that Aero or the Zero and I shall certainly have a try in the Fire-Blaze when it comes about. It is only good news as far as I'm concerned. Nit picking is for er Nits. Edited by iGRF - 21 Mar 14 at 9:37am |

The more I see of it I can't help but think it just looks like a smaller vareo.

I can't wait for Grumph's damning comments about "light weight" after he's had and sold an Aero and it didn't make him club champion.

Is that a comment about light weight or iGRF?
Trimming weight off dinghies is surely the Holy Gail of sailing as evidenced by recently launched Aero, D0, Fire. However, I don't think anyone expects them to bring instant club success.

I would just expect Grumph's view to change with bitter experience, that's all.

It has changed, I haven't ordered one and I won't until I try it and this time I'm a bit wiser with a few more hours of single handing disaster management to my credit. If wanting to be club champion had been the goal then buying a Laser would have done that job, or a Streaker. As it is I'm on the lookout for a tricked out L3K to stuff some banditness back to those Merlin boys, give them a taste of their own medicine but it will be more with an eye on my crews trophy cabinet than my own...
