It wouldn't be the bit that carried the sail, the sail would be on a conventional carrier. The "truss" would/could be the outer, kind of an extension to the 'stump' idea only much taller. I know this, too. I thought I understood your idea quite clearly until you compared it to a stump. Does it surround the flexible bit all the way up, or does the flexible bit poke out of the top 'a la stump'? (In which case, how far up? And the question of how to engineer in sufficient strength to an incomplete cylinder remains.)

Doh, this all needs drawing up... Please do.

I love the idea of masts on stumps, with the boom attached to the stump.  I am really suprised these aren't more common on newer designs.

Of course, the mast and rig shouldn't be designed in isolation from the hull.  The weight, stability, planability etc etc of the hull will all influence the rig that drives it.  Aussie skiffs, A Class cats and Moths have some of the most highly developed rigs in the world, but all are very different.

It also depends on whether the mast height and sail area is free (e.g. designing a new SMOD) or restricted (e.g. the NS14).

As I digression I suspect the slot for the mast on Project X is just so they can play with it before deciding the final position.

I suspect that one of the main reasons why you don't see it more and only really see stumped masts on development boats, is that it would be pretty-much impossible to make a "glue-it-together hull and deck mould" boat with a stump. It only really works when you're building one-off style.

So again as is often the case, a lot of design decisions are based on commercials. It's easier and cheaper to glue two mouldings together and keel-step or deck-step the mast.

I rather suspect that "how many boats can you fit in a shipping container" is a factor too.

The contender class is now working hard to develop a two or three piece mast simply to enable more masts to be fitted into a container when competitors take their boats abroad.
the same, but different...

I am a big fan of stumps and would definitely go for one on a new boat. However, they are not suited to a production boat, as has been said, they aren't really compatible with the hull mould/deck mould construction method, you cant stack the boats in a container or workshop and you cant use a double stacking trailer.

Does anyone know if the R Class L3 hull has such a short stump to fit two in a container/double stacker?

It ought to be fairly easily possible to make a removable stump, that fits in a hollow - a bit like a very short laser mast.  That would make production ad transport easier.
