RS are being quite cute here IMO, they can soak up some L*ser volume with the sailing schools and flog a good number to UK public who like beach boats. I can't see the Aero really "hurting" the other single handlers mentioned in this thread, but it doesn't t have to in order to be a commercial success. The entry price and simplicity will appeal. Look forward to seeing them at RS events in future.

Interestingly, my predictor suggests 1031 for the Aero 9. You'll need to be Phantom-sized to sail it across the wind range with that rig, though, I reckon. For comparison, I'm getting 1055 for the Aero 7 (for ordinary mortals) and 1130-ish for the Aero 5. You read it here first

The reason the yardstick has changed is, up and down the country on inland lakes, average sailors are winning race after race in phantoms. Come on guy, get over it.

i sailed the boat on Saturday and it was very good. Lined up against the Mrs who was in a 5. I thought that the 5 was surprisingly quick planing offwind in comparison to the 9. The sail area to weight ratio will make the small rig particularly quick around the course if sailed by an appropriately sized person. Can't see why it would be slower than a Laser if you wanted to apply a shandicap to it. I expect your "predictor" cannot cope with such light weights. A bit like the way the banks lending models forgot to factor in getting repaid. Any way back to the boat. As I had hope the acceleration is exceptional. This will be fun.
Apparently RS are still making final decisions on sail cuts. The 9 had a radial main but the other two were cross cut and I suspect that this is the better option. Can't wait to get my own and to go out in some big waves! |

I expect the Aero 5 will lose out mostly in lighter winds than the planing wind you had. The Laser 4.7 can be a bit of a weapon in strong winds!

I sail my phant on the sea and 1012 was hard enough, 1002 is definitely a no win situation.
The RYA could easily split inland and sea clubs out of the stats only needs one field on the input and a sort option!
