Er that was a joke if you didn't spot it.. Wink

I meant the hanging or shooting bit, the RNLI should be suitably armed.

You wouldn't believe some of the stories our Stacey tells (ex Surf Sales employee and lifeboat volunteer) of drunks and eejiots at sea, not to mention the deliberate suicides.

There again they seem to enjoy it, Lifeboaters, they get a sense of satisfaction out of thwarting Darwin for a pastime whilst using high tech kit and enjoying the camaraderie being a 'hero' brings. (Which is why I love it when they flip one of their boats showing off their own lack of seamanship at demo days..)

So in truth we're all watermen, for sure we can be stupid now and again, but it's not really that big of a deal other than to provide keyboard time..

"Fire & Rescue services are also increase the fees charged to individuals ... The cost for water or ice rescues remains at $1,500. " - Innisfil Council 2011

This munipality in Canada charges for rescues.  Funny thing though - we rescue bankers for free. Wink

No, I agree rescue is a basic part of humanity and should remain foc, or folk would delay calling for help.

Let's not get too ott here. Are you the dreaded elf and safety brigade??.
The guy will be feeling most embarrassed probably and I suspect the coast guard will have given the chap a good dressing down once he has recovered.
Lots of people go out dinghy sailing on their own and I suspect  incidents like this are quite unusual.

Personnel rescue should definitely be FOC. However the rescue team almost certainly has a legal right to claim a salvage fee for the boat. Luckily the RNLI renounce their legal right to claim salvage. But if the yacht had towed the Moth in...

an interesting point Peaky... does a standard dinghy insurance policy cover against claims of salvage?
