but why? it's soo resistriced and boring compared to sailing on the briney stuff.... unless you happen to live right in the middle of the country, or somewhere equally dumb like the middle of London ( Wink) then you've really got no excuse.... sail on the sea, abandon the ponds, leave your flooded quarries, half-full resevoirs and tree-lined rivers and get a face-full of bracing sea air, as well as some actual sea if you're lucky ... it's just like sailing inland only far more interesting!

the trouble is, at the moment i can be sailing with in half an hour of leaving the house. if i wanted to sail on the sea it would take nearer three hours!

plus inland sailing is more interesting and more fun!! LOL
plus doctors are always telling us to take less salt!!!!!! Wink

I've got bored with sea sailing... Clothes that already stink by the time you get home, salt cuts, salt everywhere, *sand* everywhere predictable wind shifts, at least two hours or more from home, tidally affected launching, all that stuff...

usually a procession on the sea, no jammy windshifts to make you curse, etc. miles of endless sea to look at. The only benefit is surfing and the salt water makes you thirsty for a beer, but then because you live miles from the place and have top drive you can't even have one of those. Sea is a two or three times a year jolly so you don't overdo it
Everything I say is my opinion, honest

Have to disagree.  My sailing kit stunk far worse when I was a pond sailor due to weed/algae.  There's no sand on my bit of the coast (concrete slip or gravel).  I moved to the coast so takes me a much longer drive now to find a lake to sail on.  Yes I have the tidally limited launching but soo worth it for getting to play in the waves and finally learning tidal tactics!

I'd have given up sailing years ago if I was still pond sailing in the midlands.

Grubby lot
try rinsing your kit before you leave to go home.
After sailing at Lyme for the Nationals and Frensham and Burghfield (no water and full of weed) no contest really.
Sorry pond huggers you can keep them.
Sail at Lee on Solent in a NE will give enough shifts even to keep hardened pond life happy.
As for sand, I wish a shingle beech but with a concrete slip so whats your problem.
Any body sailing anything is welcome to join us next year, yes even you GRF.
Regards

Hooray, some proper debate!

Shifts = sail in estuary locations if you like shifty stuff but most coastal locations deliver too
Smell = inland rivers and many lakes smell just as bad, wash your kit folks!
Waves = are good, even when you bury into them and it goes pearshaped, you grin
Salt = is nice on chips and makes you thirsty for beer
Launching = never seen a launching ramp anywhere at any sea venue to "match" QMSC's debacle
Sea-Breeze = a good thing that minimizes the number of 'wash outs' during a season

Personally, I like a venue where I can launch, sail and come ashore at the end all without having got my feet wet, let alone been thumped around by breaking waves, slipping on seaweedy rocks. I blame having sailed my whole childhood on a river, and my current choice of lake club is at least partially based on the fact that there are edges to tie up to and step into your boat in a gentlemanly manner!

I've only sailed on a lake 5 maybe 6 times and I thoroughly enjoyed it (we were spoilt, it was a fantstic lake.) I do generally prefer the sea.

Earlier this year our club was going to run the Martello Open, much organising went into it but it was unfortunately cancelled due to bad weather, a crying shame.....

...anyway, the week or so prior to the event Jackie and I sailed the course to test it out. I did a write up for our website:

We sailed the Martello course on saturday, we took a GPS on the Laser II ....here are the details:

Wind started light F 2-3 @ 200 degrees, Marginal trapeze conditions but I guess Jackie was out more than in, albeit high on the wire.
Wind increased to 3-4 once back to PBSC for the Bexhill leg.

Tide 7.1 meters high at 2.20 approx. We set off at approx 11.30 So, a stiff foul tide to the Wishtower. Timing was good at the bexhill mark , a turning tide to give us help home.

Distance travelled O/A = 21.8 nautical miles = 25.0869 miles

Time taken (I turned on/off GPS on the beach so I've trimmed the time to start / finish on the water) 3 hrs 27 mins.

....The SS Barnhill was on my mind approaching Sovereign Harbour, Checking our track log I see we sailed on the shore side of the wreck. At that state of tide I would guess we had plenty of water anyway. The next obstacle was the harbour entrance. We needed to sail close to the arms to avoid tide. Fortunately not much traffic on the day, very difficult to see what's comming out until we were in the channel. Overall We did faff around somewhat and there were fishermen on the beach so we couldn't "groyne hop" as much as I'd have liked. Eastbourne prom looks good from the water on a sunny day. The pier forced us out into the tide on the way to the Wish Tower, it may be worth mentioning at the briefing "do NOT sail under the pier". It may be tempting to some, particularly if there are light winds and foul tide on the day (not sure what the tides are on the 18th), there are gaps in the trusses that look doable but I bet there are underwater obstacles Not to mention dirty air. The leg back to the club presented choices, either running or reaching. We went for angles to get the boat planning, there was more tidal assistance further out also..... and for comfort, doing the angles keeps us cooler.

The leg from PBSC to Bexhill was a planning 3 sail reach that needed a little more wind to get Jackie on the wire, max speed was 10.6 kts. Very nice to plane for 5 miles or so. The final leg back to the club was close hauled on port all the way (sitting on the sunny side :-)), the wind direction on the day lifting us in a gentle curve that followed the bay contour. Wind against tide now so some short sharp waves.

So on the day, very enjoyable sunny sail and not really that demanding physically, no aches or pains today apart from a sore bum from sitting on cleats. If it does blow hard there's always the option of bailing out half way back at the club.

......it was fantastic sail, I don't think I'll ever convert to lakes full time. Horses for courses I guess.
