Ahem! The B14's were there as well... we didn't stay on shore and got battered. Wiped out in two gybes, ripped the kite and snapped a jib batten. The Rescue at Grafham had it's hands full all Saturday. Sunday was much better, perfect conditions. At our club we call the rescue boats "Patrol Boats", for insurance reasons. |

Would the reaction to Jamie's post be the same if the "Rescue Boat " had hit his head and not his boat? Surely any organization must take responsibility for the actions of their employees or representatives, as must the individual. If the people operating the club boat have been trained by the club and are deemed to be competent then it could be said that it was an unfortunate incident that should be covered by the club liability insurance. If the people in the club boat were not trained then it could be said that the club was negligent. There could also be questions about why the club allowed Jamie to go afloat in those conditions and if a "red" flag was flown. |

Sorry I should have made it clearer, the safety boat training includes actually going to the assistance of capsized boats including towing them in, righting from turtle and from on it's side. We also do this with all sorts of boats from Lasers through fast asymmetrics to cats. (we had the 49er/29er/59er,Musto skiffs and 420 inlands this w/end and the majority were sailing yesterday in gusts up to 37knots) much respect to them! BTW we stayed on the shore

Fantastic if only evert club did this. But power boat L2 in no way trains people to rescue dinghies there is a 'talked thought' bit on towing but no requirement to do anything practical. IMHO the RYA Safetyboat course give people basic the skills of rescuing dighies, it takes lots of experence to get to a point where you are comftable deeling with all situations. I am not sure where the basic experence level for saftey boat driving should be set, too low and we have dangours drivers on the water, too high and you left with just a few people to do the duty. As sailor we must decide if the conditions are right for ourselfs to go sailing not relie on some one else to sort it all out when it all goes wrong. (I must addmit its great to have them when something unexpected breaks) But if go out on the water we must accept the consiquences of our actions (why would any saine normal person go out in 40kts?) Please shoot me down if you feel im wrong |

Our club runs safety boat courses for everybody who does "rescue" and all our drivers are given power boat training up to level 2 (further if they want I think). On top of that they are all given first aid training which is refreshed every 2 years. |

jeffers 10th november states that his club is considering changing from RESCUE to ASSIST boats. We call ours SAFETY boats, but maybe we should change to HELP boats.Someone hand me a Thesaurus !!!!!!! Seems that whatever title we allocate they are still quite obviously out on the water for our benefit. Maybe it could be arranged that every club runs safety boat courses to coincide with the clubs sailing programme? Another option .....The competitors sign a disclaimer absolving the club of any responsibility........I seem to recall having had this discussion in the dim distant past and suspect that this suggestion is about to be shot down in flames! |

Having read this thread - all of it - I did a little hunt for something I posted a few months ago on a similar topic. Then I got (probably correctly) shot down in flames for my comments. I thought I would post them again and have a second go

One suggestion for Jamie; you have clearly changed you mind. How about saying so at the club, buy whoever a pint and suggest the offending eye-bolt (or whatever) be moved to a better position to stop the same thing happening again (even offer to help with the work). Ian |
