Went at least 3 times from Darlington as a day trip, the last time with young teenagers (didn’t go again as we moved south - not to be near Farnborough) For context it usually clashed with the start of our sailing season and so about 1 year in 3. Darlington in not as far north as people think on the train 2.30 hours, visited London more then that I do now. Would never drive it

Well I guess if your world is the M3 A3 corridor which is after all RYA territory then you'll be fine, but for me a hundred plus mile bash round the M25 I think is probably further than I wish to extend my saturday morning annual ritual so will probably give it a miss. Shame, it's one thing I really used to look forward to, another example of the post Covid landscape being irrevocably altered.

Any hints from locals on how to get from Heathrow to Farnborough? Trainline is saying 2hrs and 3 changes to get there and the bus route from Heathrow to Woking is suspended it seems.

How many people from Darlington went to Ali Pally?
And it adds 20 mins each way according to safari maps if you drive. |

For GRF’s benefit, Farnborough is on a fast rail line from Waterloo.
Perhaps there’s an argument for alternating between southern and midlands / northern venues but it would no doubt increase costs and put off some exhibitors. |

Not it the exhibitions game but plenty if you Dr Google
“At Coventry Building Society Arena, just a stone's throw from Birmingham, we have a variety of halls and lounges suitable for small and large exhibitions up to a collective 20,000sqm” |

It’s not an easy decision and there are no easy answers. Do you make it easier for the minority or the majority or just make it easier for the admin and growth of the venue. Whatever, provide an answer yourself as it is clear we have outgrown Ally Pally . Don’t provide an issue but provide a solution |

Essex ? If you live North of London it’s worse From Darlington (main East coast train line) it was an easy day trip. Farnborough adds 3 hours onto the round trip.

Farnborough is a surprisingly good venue and much better and more flexible than Ally Pally. Don’t diss it until you have been. It won’t suit everyone in terms of travel, but then nowhere will that is affordable and convenient from a relatively low participation and interest sport.
Give it a try 👍 (I used to work on the nearby business park overlooking the airfield, and used to live nearby, so have a first hand viewpoint) Edited by Chris_H - 18 Jan 22 at 5:22pm |
