In that case the club got its timing just right - we have had to wait months for boats in the past. |

Yep - for some reason they had them lined up for institutions but no-one else....we were able to get boats for the Army. But as Bootscooter says not even all the institutions were so lucky.
Same thing with the fire-sale of stock a few months ago....institutional customers first. Matt

When I went up to the warehouse a while back there were Strato' everywhere but not a 2k to be seen.
The obvious overlap with an existent RS class is with the Vision, but to my mind the 2k is a far superior boat in almost every respect. The only advantage the Vision has is that you can get two for your £10k Sport England grant whereas you can only get one 2k |

When I heard this news it raised lots of questions but foremost were..What the branding is going to be? What the approach to the classes weight problems is going to be? (Older boats apparently being 20-30kg lighter has seen all the hotshots in our club sell there new boats and buy good old-uns. I suspect thius is why there have been few new private sales)

Wow - there is such a lot of BS out there....
There have certainly been some weight inconsistencies (show me a SMOD class that hasn't had this problem) - but primarily of the using up all the spare material in the last boats of a run type.... I sail a 2K, count myself competitive and bought an old boat last year, not because it was more competitive than the one I borrowed....but becauseI wanted one for teh family and it was cheap. The limiting factor on private sails has been availability not lack of buyers...

+1 with the caveat that the weight, or lack of it, will only really be of interest to the racing owners |

Are LPE still making the Stratos?
The 2000 would appear to fit in very well with the RS Venture - the feel of sailing the boats was very similar, enough to make you wonder whether such family similarity should exist between 2 rival makers. I guess now it doesn't! |

What's a suitable crew weight for club racing an L2K? I'm hoping to get the wife interested in sailing this year, we're too heavy for a 200 and a 400 would be too tippy for us. An L2K looks like a suitable platform but when I read that it's under-canvassed, the PY isn't exactly lightening fast and it's a bit heavy then it makes me wonder if it would be suitable.

2 normal sized people would be OK in it - more than a 200, certainly, but too much weight and the chines appear to get stuck in the water in light winds. I've done OK in borrowed boats with 23 or 24 stone in the boat.
I think I'd own one but for the annoyance of not being able to DDW with the kite up - bad enough having to tack upwind, but at least that is brought on by nature, not design. Does the class ban goosewinging the kite? |

I would say that rs400's are perhaps not as tippy as you think? If your wife is not going to want to sail in strong winds anyway, you might be better with a boat that goes well in lighter conditions? The L2K seems to carry weight fairly well though. Assuming you are intending to race, I would consider what you will be racing against. Slower asymmetric boats can be frustrating to race against symmetric kites IMHO, as they reach from side to side while the Wayfarer runs straight to the mark. But if there are like-minded people sailing the same boat, it becomes tactical fun. But in your position a few years ago, I bought a 400, did some of the excellent class coaching and my only regret is not buying one sooner. I think we had 10 swims in our first year, in about 70 races? |
