are results from open events used (where there is more than one class of boat)?

it strikes me that a lot more data might be generated (across entire fleets and catching the best and worst) if times from opens were recorded and addied into the statistical mix

It is still good that the RYA have included more classes in the list, and they do recommend that the numbers for development boats and those marked with an E are adjusted depending on the age of the boats.

I was sailing locally on 925 a few years ago, '97 rules and was about the same speed as the local 29ers ( which weren't national champ level ) seemed OK at the time.
The new boats 'should' be faster.
But there are not that many cherubs doing the club racing for hcap returns, and there are a lot of different spec boats about, so the 950 is a reasonable average I suppose. ( ie about 10  fast boats to the latest rules, + lots of other older 'tubs' )

However the cherub performance was ( and still is ) very variable depending on wind, wave, size of course, tides etc, much more variable than most other boats. -
sometimes winning by tens of minutes , and sometimes last by tens of minutes .

The very fact that new boats, could be faster will cloud the mix, like wise older boats that have not been updated will also, change the flavour..  The only real truth will be at the big handicap events!

The RS Feva XL is in the RYA list but its PY number is given as 1200. Can anyone confirm this is correct? I think last year it was 1189 - but the new list doesn't indicate with a +11 to show that it's been changed so significantly. I'm trying to update my club's handbook and would like to get it right.

By the way, is it true that the Feva class rules say you can't run goose-winged downwind? In many situations the boats go better like that than with their assymetric spinnakers so obviously kids want to do that - but is that illegal?

And oh yeah, can anyone say what the 59er handicap is? The version with a trapeze. There's going to be one of these sailing locally.

This is good. It shows that with reasonable quality of data there can be some big shifts in number.

It also shows what most probably feel; that there are some hot sailors in the I14, Merlins, Phantoms and 12s.

On the Miracle front, in my limited experience of them you can propping up the bar, boat on the trailer and they are just coming off the water to whoop your ass.
Like some other things - sailing is more enjoyable when you do it with someone else

It also shows that there have been significant technology/design improvements in these classes that are at last being recognised  ( and in the  E sector : cherubs - 20, foiling moth down... lots!)

At Wilsonian we estimated that potentially a 59er with trapeze could sail to 887, but only if the crew were slimmed down to lower weight while still retaining the same righting moment as the fatties had hiking (who we reckoned were entitled to 920).

At Willies, however, we only have one 59er with, let's say larger people onboard, who now use a trapeze. Because of their crew weight, they still have hte ame drag as before, and get to use the wire less often than a lighter pair would, so we have them on a provisional 908. If a pair of skinnies bought the boat, logically we'd revise that figure down to 887; if a second boat turned up with skinnies aboard, I guess we'd again have to use 887 as it's the boat's true potential.
